26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ

Transliteration:

Rabbi moosa waharoona

Word by Word:

Lord (of) Musa and Harun."

Translations:

the Sustainer of Moses and Aaron!"

قَالَ آمَنتُمْ لَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ آذَنَ لَكُمْ إِنَّهُ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ الَّذِي عَلَّمَكُمُ السِّحْرَ فَلَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُم مِّنْ خِلَافٍ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala amantum lahu qabla an athana lakum innahu lakabeerukumu allathee AAallamakumu alssihra falasawfa taAAlamoona laoqattiAAanna aydiyakum waarjulakum min khilafin walaosallibannakum ajmaAAeena

Word by Word:

He said, "You believed in him before [that] I gave permission to you. Indeed, he (is) surely your chief who has taught you the magic, so surely soon you will know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet of opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

Translations:

Said [Pharaoh]: Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Verily, he must be your master who has taught you magic! But in time you shall come to know [my revenge]: most certainly shall I cut off your hands and your feet in great numbers, because of [your] perverseness, and shall most certainly crucify you in great numbers, all together!"

Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!"

(Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know. Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will crucify you every one.

(Pharaoh) said: You believe in him before I give you leave; surely he is the chief of you who taught you enchantment, so you shall know. Certainly I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposites sides, and I will crucify you all.

[Pharaoh] said, "You believed Moses before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

قَالُوا لَا ضَيْرَ إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo la dayra inna ila rabbina munqaliboona

Word by Word:

They said, "No harm. Indeed, we to our Lord (will) return.

Translations:

They answered: No harm [canst thou do to us]: verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn!

They said: "No matter! for us, we shall but return to our Lord!

They said: It is no hurt, for lo! unto our Lord we shall return.

They said: No harm; surely to our Lord we return.

They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَايَانَا أَن كُنَّا أَوَّلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Inna natmaAAu an yaghfira lana rabbuna khatayana an kunna awwala almu/mineena

Word by Word:

Indeed, we hope that will forgive us our Lord our sins, because we are (the) first (of) the believers."

Translations:

Behold, we [but] ardently desire that our Sustainer forgive us our faults in return for our having been foremost among the believers!"

Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may become foremost among the believers!

Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the first of the believers.

We hope that our Lord will forgive us our wrongs because we are the first of the believers.

Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."

وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

Transliteration:

Waawhayna ila moosa an asri biAAibadee innakum muttabaAAoona

Word by Word:

And We inspired to Musa, [that] "Travel by night with My slaves, indeed, you (will be) followed."

Translations:

AND [there came a time when] We inspired Moses thus: Go forth with My servants by night: for, behold, you will he pursued!"

By inspiration we told Moses: "Travel by night with my servants; for surely

And We inspired Moses, saying: Take away My slaves by night, for ye will be pursued.

And We revealed to Moses, saying: Travel by night with My servants -- you will be pursued.

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."

فَأَرْسَلَ فِرْعَوْنُ فِي الْمَدَائِنِ حَاشِرِينَ

Transliteration:

Faarsala firAAawnu fee almada-ini hashireena

Then sent Firaun in the cities gatherers,

Translations:

And Pharaoh sent heralds unto all cities,

Then Pharaoh sent heralds to (all) the Cities,

Then Pharaoh sent into the cities summoners,

And Pharaoh sent heralds into the cities (proclaiming):

Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers
