111 - Thorns (Al-Masad)

Order of Revelation: 6

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration:

Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi

Word by Word:

In (the) name (of) Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Translations:

In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace.

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

Transliteration:

Tabbat yada abee lahabin watabba

Word by Word:

Perish (the) hands (of) Abu Lahab and perish he.

Translations:

DOOMED are the hands of him of the glowing countence: and doomed is he!

Perish the hands of the Father of Flame! Perish he!

The power of Abu Lahab will perish, and he will perish.

Abu Lahab's hands will perish and he will perish.

May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.

مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ

Transliteration:

Ma aghna AAanhu maluhu wama kasaba

Word by Word:

Not (will) avail him his wealth and what he earned.

Translations:

What will his wealth avail him, and all that he has gained?

No profit to him from all his wealth, and all his gains!

His wealth and gains will not exempt him.

His wealth and that which he earns will not avail him.

His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.

سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ

Transliteration:

Sayasla naran thata lahabin

Word by Word:

He will be burnt (in) a Fire of Blazing Flames,

Translations:

[In the life to come] he shall have to endure a fire fiercely glowing;

Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame!

He will be plunged in flaming Fire,

He will burn in fire giving rise to flames --

He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame

وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ

Transliteration:

Waimraatuhu hammalata alhatabi

Word by Word:

And his wife, (the) carrier (of) firewood,

Translations:

together with his wife, that carrier of evil tales,

His wife shall carry the (crackling) wood - As fuel!-

And his wife, the wood-carrier,

And his wife -- the bearer of slander;

And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.

فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍ

Transliteration:

Fee jeediha hablun min masadin

Word by Word:

In her neck (will be) a rope of palm-fiber.

Translations:

[who bears] around her neck a rope of twisted strands!

A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck!

Will have upon her neck a halter of palm-fibre.

Upon her neck a halter of twisted rope!

Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
