26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')
Order of Revelation: 47
Tanazzalu AAala kulli affakin atheemin
They descend upon every liar sinful.
They descend upon all sinful self-deceivers
They descend on every lying, wicked person,
They descend on every sinful, false one.
They descend upon every lying, sinful one --
They descend upon every sinful liar.
Yulqoona alssamAAa waaktharuhum kathiboona
They pass on (what is) heard, and most of them (are) liars.
who readily lend ear [to every falsehood], and most of whom lie to others as well.
(Into whose ears) they pour hearsay vanities, and most of them are liars.
They listen eagerly, but most of them are liars.
They give ear, and most of them are liars.
They pass on what is heard, and most of them are liars.
WaalshshuAAarao yattabiAAuhumu alghawoona
And the poets - follow them the deviators.
And as for the poets [they, too, are prone to deceive themselves: and so, only] those who are lost in grievous error would follow them.
And the Poets,- It is those straying in Evil, who follow them:
As for poets, the erring follow them.
And the poets -- the deviators follow them.
And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;
Alam tara annahum fee kulli wadin yaheemoona
Do not you see that they in every valley [they] roam,
Art thou not aware that they roam confusedly through all the valleys [of words and thoughts],
Seest thou not that they wander distracted in every valley?-
Hast thou not seen how they stray in every valley,
Seest thou not that they wander in every valley,
Do you not see that in every valley they roam
Waannahum yaqooloona ma la yafAAaloona
And that they say what not they do?
and that they [so often] say what they do not do [or feel]?
And that they say what they practise not?-
And how they say that which they do not?
And that they say that which they do not?
And that they say what they do not do? -
Illa allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati wathakaroo Allaha katheeran waintasaroo min baAAdi ma thulimoo wasayaAAlamu allatheena thalamoo ayya munqalabin yanqaliboona
Except those who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah much, and defend themselves after they were wronged. And will come to know those who have wronged (to) what return they will return.
[Most of them are of this kind ] save those who have attained to faith, and do righteous deeds, and remember God unceasingly, and defend themselves [only] after having been wronged, and [trust in God's promise that] those who are bent on wrongdoing will in time come to know how evil a turn their destinies are bound to take!
Except those who believe, work righteousness, engage much in the remembrance of God, and defend themselves only after they are unjustly attacked. And soon will the unjust assailants know what vicissitudes their affairs will take!
Save those who believe and do good works, and remember Allah much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. Those who do wrong will come to know by what a (great) reverse they will be overturned!
Except those who believe and do good and remember Allah much, and defend themselves after they are oppressed. And they who do wrong, will know to what final place of turning they will turn back.
Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.
