105 - The Elephant (Al-Feel)

Order of Revelation: 19

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration:

Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi

Word by Word:

In (the) name (of) Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Translations:

In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace.

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ

Transliteration:

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka bi-as-habi alfeeli

Word by Word:

Have not you seen how dealt your Lord with (the) Companions (of the) Elephant?

Translations:

ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer dealt with the Army of the Elephant?

Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the Companions of the Elephant?

Hast thou not seen how thy Lord dealt with the owners of the Elephant?

Hast thou not seen how thy Lord dealt with the possessors of the elephant?

Have you not considered, [O Muhammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?

أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ

Transliteration:

Alam yajAAal kaydahum fee tadleelin

Word by Word:

Did not He make their plan go astray?

Translations:

Did He not utterly confound their artful planning?

Did He not make their treacherous plan go astray?

Did He not bring their stratagem to naught,

Did He not cause their war to end in confusion?

Did He not make their plan into misguidance?

وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ

Transliteration:

Waarsala AAalayhim tayran ababeela

Word by Word:

And He sent against them birds (in) flocks.

Translations:

Thus, He let loose upon them great swarms of flying creatures

And He sent against them Flights of Birds,

And send against them swarms of flying creatures,

And send against them birds in flocks?

And He sent against them birds in flocks,

تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

Transliteration:

Tarmeehim bihijaratin min sijjeelin

Word by Word:

Striking them with stones of baked clay.

Translations:

which smote them with stone-hard blows of chastisement pre-ordained,

Striking them with stones of baked clay.

Which pelted them with stones of baked clay,

Casting at them decreed stones --

Striking them with stones of hard clay,

فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ

Transliteration:

FajaAAalahum kaAAasfin ma/koolin

Word by Word:

Then He made them like straw eaten up.

Translations:

and caused them to become like a field of grain that has been eaten down to stubble

Then did He make them like an empty field of stalks and straw, (of which the corn) has been eaten up.

And made them like green crops devoured (by cattle)?

So He rendered them like straw eaten up?

And He made them like eaten straw.
