104 - The Backbiter (Al-Humazah)

Order of Revelation: 32

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration:

Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi

Word by Word:

In (the) name (of) Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Translations:

In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace.

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ

Transliteration:

Waylun likulli humazatin lumazatin

Word by Word:

Woe to every slanderer backbiter!

Translations:

WOE unto every slanderer, fault-finder!

Woe to every (kind of) scandal-monger and-backbiter,

Woe unto every slandering traducer,

Woe to every slanderer, defamer!

Woe to every scorner and mocker

الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ

Transliteration:

Allathee jamaAAa malan waAAaddadahu

Word by Word:

The one who collects wealth and counts it.

Translations:

[Woe unto him who amasses wealth and counts it a safeguard,

Who pileth up wealth and layeth it by,

Who hath gathered wealth (of this world) and arranged it.

Who amasses wealth and counts it --

Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.

يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ

Transliteration:

Yahsabu anna malahu akhladahu

Word by Word:

Thinking that his wealth will make him

Translations:

thinking that his wealth will make him live forever!

Thinking that his wealth would make him last for ever!

He thinketh that his wealth will render him immortal.

He thinks that his wealth will make him abide.

He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

كَلَّا لَيُنبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ

Transliteration:

Kalla layunbathanna fee alhutamati

Word by Word:

Nay! Surely he will be thrown in the Crusher.

Translations:

Nay, but [in the life to come such as] he shall indeed be abandoned to crushing torment!

By no means! He will be sure to be thrown into That which Breaks to Pieces,

Nay, but verily he will be flung to the Consuming One.

Nay, he will certainly be hurled into the crushing disaster;

No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ

Transliteration:

Wama adraka ma alhutamatu

And what will make you know what the Crusher (is)?

Translations:

And what could make thee conceive what that crushing torment will be?

And what will explain to thee That which Breaks to Pieces?

Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Consuming One is!

And what will make thee realize what the crushing disaster is?

And what can make you know what is the Crusher?
