26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّمِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala naAAam wa-innakum ithan lamina almuqarrabeena

Word by Word:

He said, "Yes, and indeed you then surely (will be) of the ones who are brought near."

Translations:

Answered he: Yea - and, verily, in that case you shall be among those who are near unto me.

He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."

He said: Aye, and ye will then surely be of those brought near (to me).

He said: Yes, and surely you will then be of those who are nearest (to me).

He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰ أَلْقُوا مَا أَنتُم مُّلْقُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala lahum moosa alqoo ma antum mulqoona

Word by Word:

Said to them Musa. "Throw what you (are) going to throw."

Translations:

[And] Moses said unto them: Throw whatever you are going to throw!"

Moses said to them: "Throw ye - that which ye are about to throw!"

Moses said unto them: Throw what ye are going to throw!

Moses said to them: Cast what you are going to cast.

Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."

فَأَلْقَوْا حِبَالَهُمْ وَعِصِيَّهُمْ وَقَالُوا بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّا لَنَحْنُ الْغَالِبُونَ

Transliteration:

Faalqaw hibalahum waAAisiyyahum waqaloo biAAizzati firAAawna inna lanahnu alghaliboona

Word by Word:

So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might (of) Firaun, indeed, we surely, we (are) the victorious."

Translations:

Thereupon they threw their [magic ropes and their staffs, and said: By Pharaoh's might, behold, it is we indeed who have prevailed!"

So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly win!"

Then they threw down their cords and their staves and said: By Pharaoh's might, lo! we verily are the winners.

So they cast down their cords and their rods and said: By Pharaoh's power we shall most surely be victorious.

So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."

فَأَلْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ

Transliteration:

Faalqa moosa AAasahu fa-itha hiya talqafu ma ya/fikoona

Word by Word:

Then threw Musa his staff and behold! It swallowed what they falsified.

Translations:

[But] then Moses threw his staff - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions.

Then Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake!

Then Moses threw his staff and lo! it swallowed that which they did falsely show.

Then Moses cast down his rod, and lo! it swallowed up their fabrication.

Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.

فَأُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سَاجِدِينَ

Transliteration:

Faolqiya alssaharatu sajideena

Word by Word:

Then fell down the magicians prostrate.

Translations:

And down fell the sorcerers, prostrating themselves in adoration,

Then did the sorcerers fall down, prostrate in adoration,

And the wizards were flung prostrate,

And the enchanters were thrown down prostrate --

So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah ].

قَالُوا آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo amanna birabbi alAAalameena

Word by Word:

They said, "We believe in (the) Lord (of) the worlds,

Translations:

[and] exclaimed: We have come to believe in the Sustainer of all the worlds,

Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds,

They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,
