26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

قَالَ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala rabbu alssamawati waal-ardi wama baynahuma in kuntum mooqineena

Word by Word:

He said, "Lord (of) the heavens and the earth and whatever (is) between them, if you (should) be convinced."

Translations:

[Moses] answered: [He is] the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them: if you would but [allow yourselves to] be convinced!"

(Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."

(Moses) said: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye had but sure belief.

He said: The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure.

[Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."

قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ أَلَا تَسْتَمِعُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala liman hawlahu ala tastamiAAoona

Word by Word:

He said to those around him, "Do not you hear?"

Translations:

Said [Pharaoh] unto those around him: Did you hear [what he said]?"

(Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"

(Pharaoh) said unto those around him: Hear ye not?

(Pharaoh) said to those around him: Do you not hear?

[Pharaoh] said to those around him, "Do you not hear?"

قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala rabbukum warabbu aba-ikumu al-awwaleena

Word by Word:

He said, "Your Lord and (the) Lord (of) your forefathers."

Translations:

[And Moses] continued: [He is] your Sustainer, [too,] as well as the Sustainer of your forefathers of old!"

(Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"

He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers.

He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old.

[Moses] said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers."

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ الَّذِي أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ لَمَجْنُونٌ

Transliteration:

Qala inna rasoolakumu allathee orsila ilaykum lamajnoonun

Word by Word:

He said, "Indeed, your Messenger who has been sent to you (is) surely mad."

Translations:

[Pharaoh] exclaimed: Behold, [this] your 'apostle' who [claims that he] has been sent unto you is mad indeed!

(Pharaoh) said: "Truly your apostle who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"

(Pharaoh) said: Lo! your messenger who hath been sent unto you is indeed a madman!

(Pharaoh) said: Surely your messenger, who is sent to you, is mad.

[Pharaoh] said, "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."

قَالَ رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala rabbu almashriqi waalmaghribi wama baynahuma in kuntum taAAqiloona

Word by Word:

He said, "Lord (of) the east and the west and whatever (is) between them, if you were (to) reason."

Translations:

[But Moses] went on: [He of whom I speak is] the Sustainer of the east and the west and of all that is between the two"- as you would know] if you would but use your reason!"

(Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"

He said: Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if ye did but understand.

He said: The Lord of the East and the West and what is between them, if you have any sense.

[Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."

قَالَ لَئِنِ اتَّخَذْتَ إِلَٰهًا غَيْرِي لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ الْمَسْجُونِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala la-ini ittakhathta ilahan ghayree laajAAalannaka mina almasjooneena

Word by Word:

He said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely make you among those imprisoned."

Translations:

Said [Pharaoh]: Indeed, if thou choose to worship any deity other than me, I shall most certainly throw thee into prison!

(Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"

(Pharaoh) said: If thou choosest a god other than me, I assuredly shall place thee among the prisoners.

(Pharaoh) said: If thou takest a god besides me, I will certainly put thee is prison.

[Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned."
