26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

وَمَا أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ الْكَاذِبِينَ

Transliteration:

Wama anta illa basharun mithluna wa-in nathunnuka lamina alkathibeena

Word by Word:

And not you (are) except a man like us, and indeed, we think you surely (are) of the liars.

Translations:

for thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! And, behold, we think that thou art a consummate liar!

"Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar!

Thou art but a mortal like us, and lo! we deem thee of the liars.

And thou art naught but a mortal like ourselves, and we deem thee to be a liar.

You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.

فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ

Transliteration:

Faasqit AAalayna kisafan mina alssama-i in kunta mina alssadiqeena

Word by Word:

Then cause toll upon us fragments of the sky, if you are of the truthful."

Translations:

Cause, then, fragments of the sky to fall down upon us, if thou art a man of truth!"

"Now cause a piece of the sky to fall on us, if thou art truthful!"

Then make fragments of the heaven fall upon us, if thou art of the truthful.

So cause a portion of the heaven to fall on us, if thou art truthful.

So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."

قَالَ رَبِّي أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala rabbee aAAlamu bima taAAmaloona

Word by Word:

He said, "My Lord knows best of what you do."

Translations:

Answered [Shu'ayb]: My Sustainer knows fully well what you are doing."

He said: "My Lord knows best what ye do."

He said: My Lord is Best Aware of what ye do.

He said: My Lord knows best what you do.

He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الظُّلَّةِ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Transliteration:

Fakaththaboohu faakhathahum AAathabu yawmi alththullati innahu kana AAathaba yawmin AAatheemin

Word by Word:

But they denied him, so seized them (the) punishment (of the) day (of) the shadow. Indeed, it was (the) punishment (of) a Day Great.

Translations:

But they gave him the lie. And thereupon suffering overtook them on a day dark with shadows: and, verily, it was the suffering of an awesome day!

But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.

But they denied him, so there came on them the retribution of the day of gloom. Lo! it was the retribution of an awful day.

But they rejected him, so the chastisement of the day of Covering overtook them. Surely it was the chastisement of a grievous day!

And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Inna fee thalika laayatan wama kana aktharuhum mu/mineena

Word by Word:

Indeed, in that surely, is a sign but not are most of them believers.

Translations:

In this [story], behold, there is a message [unto men], even though most of them will not believe [in it].

Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

Lo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.

Surely there is a sign in this; yet most of them believe not.

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration:

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu alrraheemu

Word by Word:

And indeed, your Lord surely, He (is) the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Translations:

But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace!

And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

And surely thy Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
