26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Transliteration:

Wala tamassooha bisoo-in faya/khuthakum AAathabu yawmin AAatheemin

Word by Word:

And (do) not touch her with harm, lest seize you (the) punishment (of) a Day Great."

Translations:

and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!"

"Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you."

And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day.

And touch her not with evil, lest the chastisement of a grievous day overtake you.

And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا نَادِمِينَ

Transliteration:

FaAAaqarooha faasbahoo nadimeena

But they hamstrung her, then they became regretful.

Translations:

But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it:

But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets.

But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent.

But the hamstrung her, then regretted,

فَأَخَذَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Faakhathahumu alAAathabu inna fee thalika laayatan wama kana aktharuhum mu/mineena

Word by Word:

So seized them the punishment. Indeed, in that surely is a sign, but not are most of them believers.

Translations:

for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story], behold, there is a message [unto men], even though most of them will not believe [in it].

But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.

So the chastisement overtook them. Surely there is a sign in this; yet most of them believe not.

And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration:

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu alrraheemu

Word by Word:

And indeed, your Lord, surely He (is) the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Translations:

But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace!

And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

And surely thy Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

Transliteration:

Kaththabat qawmu lootin almursaleena

Word by Word:

Denied, (the) people (of) Lut, the Messengers.

Translations:

[AND] the people of Lot gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers*

The people of Lut rejected the apostles.

The folk of Lot denied the messengers (of Allah),

The people of Lot gave the lie to the messengers.

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Transliteration:

Ith qala lahum akhoohum lootun ala tattaqoona

When said to them their brother Lut, "Will not you fear (Allah)?

Translations:

when their brother Lot said unto them: Will you not be conscious of God?

Behold, their brother Lut said to them: "Will ye not fear (God)?

When their brother Lot said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

When their brother Lot said to them: Will you not guard against evil?

When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allah ?
