26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Transliteration:

Faittaqoo Allaha waateeAAooni

Word by Word:

So fear Allah and obey me.

Translations:

Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me,

"But fear God and obey me;

Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me,

So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.

So fear Allah and obey me.

وَلَا تُطِيعُوا أَمْرَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ

Transliteration:

Wala tuteeAAoo amra almusrifeena

Word by Word:

And (do) not obey (the) command (of) the transgressors,

Translations:

and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses

"And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,-

And obey not the command of the prodigal,

And obey not the bidding of the extravagant,

And do not obey the order of the transgressors,

الَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ

Transliteration:

Allatheena yufsidoona fee al-ardi wala yuslihoona

Word by Word:

Those who spread corruption in the earth and (do) not reform."

Translations:

those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!"

"Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)."

Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not.

Who make mischief in the land and act not aright.

Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."

قَالُوا إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مِنَ الْمُسَحَّرِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo innama anta mina almusahhareena

Word by Word:

They said, "Only you (are) of those bewitched.

Translations:

Said they: Thou art but one of the bewitched!

They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!

They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched;

They said: Thou art only a deluded person.

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

مَا أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِآيَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ

Transliteration:

Ma anta illa basharun mithluna fa/ti bi-ayatin in kunta mina alssadiqeena

Word by Word:

Not you (are) except a man like us, so bring a sign, if you (are) of the truthful."

Translations:

Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!"

"Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!"

Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful.

Thou art naught but a mortal like ourselves -- so bring a sign if thou art truthful.

You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."

قَالَ هَٰذِهِ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

Transliteration:

Qala hathihi naqatun laha shirbun walakum shirbu yawmin maAAloomin

Word by Word:

He said, "This (is) a she-camel. For her (is a share of) drink, and for you (is a share of) drink (on) a day known.

Translations:

Replied he: This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor];

He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed.

He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day.

He said: This is a she-camel; she has her portion of water, and you have your portion of water at an appointed time.

He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.
