26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

وَاتَّقُوا الَّذِي أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration:

Waittaqoo allathee amaddakum bima taAAlamoona

Word by Word:

And fear the One Who has aided you with what you know,

Translations:

and [thus] be conscious of Him who has [so] amply provided you with all [the good] that you might think of

"Yea, fear Him Who has bestowed on you freely all that ye know.

Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know,

And keep your duty to Him Who aids you with that which you know --

And fear He who provided you with that which you know,

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنْعَامٍ وَبَنِينَ

Transliteration:

Amaddakum bi-anAAamin wabaneena

Word by Word:

He has aided you with cattle and children,

Translations:

amply provided you with flocks, and children,

"Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons,-

Hath aided you with cattle and sons.

He aids you with cattle and children

Provided you with grazing livestock and children

وَجَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Transliteration:

Wajannatin waAAuyoonin

And gardens and springs.

Translations:

and gardens, and springs -:

"And Gardens and Springs.

And gardens and watersprings.

And gardens and fountains.

And gardens and springs.

إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Transliteration:

Innee akhafu AAalaykum AAathaba yawmin AAatheemin

Word by Word:

Indeed, I [I] fear for you (the) punishment (of) a Day Great."

Translations:

for, verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!"

"Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day."

Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day.

Surely I fear for you the chastisement of a grievous day.

Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."

قَالُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْنَا أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُن مِّنَ الْوَاعِظِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo sawaon AAalayna awaAAathta am lam takun mina alwaAAitheena

Word by Word:

They said, "(It is) same to us whether you advise or not you are of the advisors.

Translations:

[But] they answered. It is all one to us whether thou preachest [something new] or art not of those who [like to] preach.

They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our) admonishers!

They said: It is all one to us whether thou preachest or art not of those who preach;

They said: It is the same to us whether thou admonish, or art not one of the admonishers:

They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.

إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا خُلُقُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

Transliteration:

In hatha illa khuluqu al-awwaleena

Word by Word:

Not (is) this but (the) custom (of) the former (people),

Translations:

This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung,

"This is no other than a customary device of the ancients,

This is but a fable of the men of old,

This is naught but a fabrication of the ancients:

This is not but the custom of the former peoples,
