26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala hal yasmaAAoonakum ith tadAAoona

Word by Word:

He said, "Do they hear you when you call?

Translations:

Said he: Do [you really think that] they hear you when you invoke them,

He said: "Do they listen to you when ye call (on them), or do you good or harm?"

He said: Do they hear you when ye cry?

He said: Do they hear you when you call (on them),

He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?

أَوْ يَنفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ

Transliteration:

Aw yanfaAAoonakum aw yadurroona

Word by Word:

Or (do) they benefit you or they harm (ou)?"

Translations:

or benefit you or do you harm?"

Or do you good or harm?

Or do they benefit or harm you?

Or do they benefit or harm you?

Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"

قَالُوا بَلْ وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo bal wajadna abaana kathalika yafAAaloona

Word by Word:

They said, "Nay, but we found our forefathers like that - doing."

Translations:

They exclaimed: But we found our forefathers doing the same!"

They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."

They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting on this wise.

They said: Nay, we found our fathers doing so.

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala afaraaytum ma kuntum taAAbudoona

Word by Word:

He said, "Do you see what you have been worshipping,

Translations:

Said [Abraham]: Have you, then, ever considered what it is that you have been worshipping

He said: "Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping,-

He said: See now that which ye worship,

He said: Do you then see what you worship --

He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمُ الْأَقْدَمُونَ

Transliteration:

Antum waabaokumu al-aqdamoona

Word by Word:

You and your forefathers.

Translations:

you and those ancient forebears of yours?

"Ye and your fathers before you?-

Ye and your forefathers!

You and your ancient sires?

You and your ancient forefathers?

فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِّي إِلَّا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Transliteration:

Fa-innahum AAaduwwun lee illa rabba alAAalameena

Word by Word:

Indeed, they (are) enemies to me, except (the) Lord (of) the worlds,

Translations:

Now [as for me, I know that,] verily, these [false deities] are my enemies, [and that none is my helper] save the Sustainer of all the worlds,

"For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds;

Lo! they are (all) an enemy unto me, save the Lord of the Worlds,

Surely they are an enemy to me, but not (so) the Lord of the worlds,

Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,
