26 - The Poets (Al-Shu'ara')

Order of Revelation: 47

قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala alam nurabbika feena waleedan walabithta feena min AAumurika sineena

Word by Word:

He said, "Did not we bring you up among us (as) a child, and you remained among us of your life years?

Translations:

[But when Moses had delivered his message, Pharaoh] said: Did we not bring thee up among us when thou wert a child? And didst thou not spend among us years of thy [later] life?

(Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?

(Pharaoh) said (unto Moses): Did we not rear thee among us as a child? And thou didst dwell many years of thy life among us,

(Pharaoh) said: Did we not bring thee up as a child among us, and thou didst tarry (many) years of thy life among us?

[Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?

وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ الَّتِي فَعَلْتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ

Transliteration:

WafaAAalta faAAlataka allatee faAAalta waanta mina alkafireena

Word by Word:

And you did your deed which you did, and you (were) of the ungrateful."

Translations:

And yet thou didst commit that [heinous] deed of thine, and [hast thus shown that] thou art one of the ingrate!"

"And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"

And thou didst that thy deed which thou didst, and thou wast one of the ingrates.

And thou didst (that) deed of thine which thou didst and thou art of the ungrateful ones.

And [then] you did your deed which you did, and you were of the ungrateful."

قَالَ فَعَلْتُهَا إِذًا وَأَنَا مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ

Transliteration:

Qala faAAaltuha ithan waana mina alddalleena

Word by Word:

He said, "I did it when I (was) of those who are astray.

Translations:

Replied [Moses]: I committed it while I was still going astray;

Moses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.

He said: I did it then, when I was of those who are astray.

He said: I did it then when I was of those who err.

[Moses] said, "I did it, then, while I was of those astray.

فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِي رَبِّي حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

Transliteration:

Fafarartu minkum lamma khiftukum fawahaba lee rabbee hukman wajaAAalanee mina almursaleena

Word by Word:

So I fled from you when I feared you. But granted to me my Lord, judgment and made me of the Messengers.

Translations:

and I fled from you because I feared you. But [since] then my Sustainer has endowed me with the ability to judge [between right and wrong], and has made me one of [His] message-bearers.

"So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the apostles.

Then I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him).

So I fled from you when I feared you, then my Lord granted me judgment and made me of the messengers.

So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me wisdom and prophethood and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.

وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَيَّ أَنْ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ

Transliteration:

Watilka niAAmatun tamunnuha AAalayya an AAabbadta banee isra-eela

Word by Word:

And this (is the) favor with which you reproach [on] me, that you have enslaved (the) Children of Israel."

Translations:

And [as for] that favour of which thou so tauntingly remindest me - [was it not] due to thy having enslaved the children of Israel?"

"And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"

And this is the past favour wherewith thou reproachest me: that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel.

And is it a favour of which thou remindest me that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel?

And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"

قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَا رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala firAAawnu wama rabbu alAAalameena

Word by Word:

Firaun said "And what (is the) Lord (of) the worlds?"

Translations:

Said Pharaoh: And what [and who] is that 'Sustainer of all the worlds'?''

Pharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

Pharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the Worlds?

Pharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the worlds?

Said Pharaoh, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?"
