7 - The Purgatory (Al-A'araf)

Order of Revelation: 39

وَمَا وَجَدْنَا لِأَكْثَرِهِم مِّنْ عَهْدٍ وَإِن وَجَدْنَا أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَفَاسِقِينَ

Transliteration:

Wama wajadna li-aktharihim min AAahdin wa-in wajadna aktharahum lafasiqeena

Word by Word:

And not We found for most of them any covenant. But We found most of them certainly, defiantly disobedient.

Translations:

and in most of them We found no [inner] bond with anything that is right -and most of them We found to be iniquitous indeed.

Most of them We found not men (true) to their covenant: but most of them We found rebellious and disobedient.

We found no (loyalty to any) covenant in most of them. Nay, most of them We found wrong-doers.

And We found not in most of them (faithfulness to) covenant; and We found most of them to be transgressors.

And We did not find for most of them any covenant; but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.

ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَا مِن بَعْدِهِم مُّوسَىٰ بِآيَاتِنَا إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَئِهِ فَظَلَمُوا بِهَا فَانظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُفْسِدِينَ

Transliteration:

Thumma baAAathna min baAAdihim moosa bi-ayatina ila firAAawna wamala-ihi fathalamoo biha faonuthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu almufsideena

Word by Word:

Then We sent after them Musa with Our Signs to Firaun and his chiefs, But they were unjust to them. So see how was (the) end (of) the corrupters.

Translations:

AND AFTER those [early people] We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones, and they wilfully rejected them: and behold what happened in the end to those spreaders of corruption!

Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them: So see what was the end of those who made mischief.

Then, after them, We sent Moses with our tokens unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they repelled them. Now, see the nature of the consequence for the corrupters!

Then, after them, We sent Moses with Our messages to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they disbelieved them. See, then, what was the end of the mischief-makers!

Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them. So see how was the end of the corrupters.

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ يَا فِرْعَوْنُ إِنِّي رَسُولٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Transliteration:

Waqala moosa ya firAAawnu innee rasoolun min rabbi alAAalameena

Word by Word:

And Musa said, "O Firaun! Indeed, I am a Messenger from (the) Lord (of) the worlds

Translations:

And Moses said: "O Pharaoh! Verily, I am an apostle from the Sustainer of all the worlds,

Moses said: "O Pharaoh! I am an apostle from the Lord of the worlds,-

Moses said: O Pharaoh! Lo! I am a messenger from the Lord of the Worlds,

And Moses said: O Pharaoh, surely I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds,

And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds

حَقِيقٌ عَلَىٰ أَن لَّا أَقُولَ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِلَّا الْحَقَّ قَدْ جِئْتُكُم بِبَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعِيَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ

Transliteration:

Haqeequn AAala an la aqoola AAala Allahi illa alhaqqa qad ji/tukum bibayyinatin min rabbikum faarsil maAAiya banee isra-eela

Word by Word:

Obligated on that not I say about Allah except the truth. Verily, I (have) come to you with a clear Sign from your Lord, so send with me (the) Children (of) Israel."

Translations:

so constituted that I cannot say anything about God but the truth. I have now come unto you with a clear evidence from your Sustainer: let, then, the children of Israel go with me!"

One for whom it is right to say nothing but truth about God. Now have I come unto you (people), from your Lord, with a clear (Sign): So let the Children of Israel depart along with me."

Approved upon condition that I speak concerning Allah nothing but the truth. I come unto you (lords of Egypt) with a clear proof from your Lord. So let the Children of Israel go with me.

Worthy of not saying anything about Allah except the truth. I have come to you indeed with clear proof from your Lord, so let the Children of Israel go with me.

[Who is] obligated not to say about Allah except the truth. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel."

قَالَ إِن كُنتَ جِئْتَ بِآيَةٍ فَأْتِ بِهَا إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala in kunta ji/ta bi-ayatin fa/ti biha in kunta mina alssadiqeena

Word by Word:

He said, "If you have come with a Sign, then bring it if you are of the truthful."

Translations:

Said [Pharaoh]: "If thou hast come with a sign, produce it-if thou art a man of truth!"

(Pharaoh) said: "If indeed thou hast come with a Sign, show it forth,- if thou tellest the truth."

(Pharaoh) said: If thou comest with a token, then produce it, if thou art of those who speak the truth.

He said: If thou hast come with a sign, produce it, if thou are truthful.

[Pharaoh] said, "If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful."

فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ

Transliteration:

Faalqa AAasahu fa-itha hiya thuAAbanun mubeenun

Word by Word:

So he threw his staff, and suddenly it (was) a serpent, manifest.

Translations:

Thereupon [Moses] threw down his staff, and lo! it was a serpent, plainly visible;

Then (Moses) threw his rod, and behold! it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!

Then he flung down his staff and lo! it was a serpent manifest;

So he threw his rod, then lo! it was a serpent manifest,

So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest.
