7 - The Purgatory (Al-A'araf)

Order of Revelation: 39

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

Transliteration:

Wa-itha quri-a alqur-anu faistamiAAoo lahu waansitoo laAAallakum turhamoona

Word by Word:

And when is recited the Quran, then listen to it and pay attention so that you may receive mercy.

Translations:

Hence, when the Qur'an is voiced, hearken unto it, and listen in silence, so that you might be graced with [God's] mercy."

When the Qur'an is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy.

And when the Qur'an is recited, give ear to it and pay heed, that ye may obtain mercy.

And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and remain silent, that mercy may be shown to you.

So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.

Transliteration:

Waothkur rabbaka fee nafsika tadarruAAan wakheefatan wadoona aljahri mina alqawli bialghuduwwi waal-asali wala takun mina alghafileena

Word by Word:

And remember your Lord in yourself humbly and (in) fear and without the loudness of [the] words, in the mornings and (in) the evenings. And (do) not be among the heedless.

Translations:

And bethink thyself of thy Sustainer humbly and with awe, and without raising thy voice, at morn and at evening; and do not allow thyself to be heedless.

And do thou (O reader!) Bring thy Lord to remembrance in thy (very) soul, with humility and in reverence, without loudness in words, in the mornings and evenings; and be not thou of those who are unheedful.

And do thou (O Muhammad) remember thy Lord within thyself humbly and with awe, below thy breath, at morn and evening. And be not thou of the neglectful.

And remember thy Lord within thyself humbly and fearing, and in a voice not loud, in the morning and the evening, and be not of the heedless.

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِهِ وَيُسَبِّحُونَهُ وَلَهُ يَسْجُدُونَ

Transliteration:

Inna allatheena AAinda rabbika la yastakbiroona AAan AAibadatihi wayusabbihoonahu walahu yasjudoona

Word by Word:

Indeed, those who (are) near your Lord, they (do) not turn away in pride from His worship. And they glorify Him and to Him they prostrate.

Translations:

Behold, those who are near unto thy Sustainer are never too proud to worship Him; and they extol His limitless glory, and prostrate themselves before Him [alone].

Those who are near to thy Lord, disdain not to do Him worship: They celebrate His praises, and bow down before Him.

Lo! those who are with thy Lord are not too proud to do Him service, but they praise Him and prostrate before Him.

Surely those who are with thy Lord are not too proud to serve Him, and they glorify Him and prostrate themselves before Him.

Indeed, those who are near your Lord are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate.
