7 - The Purgatory (Al-A'araf)

Order of Revelation: 39

قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ

Transliteration:

Qala ma manaAAaka alla tasjuda ith amartuka qala ana khayrun minhu khalaqtanee min narin wakhalaqtahu min teenin

Word by Word:

(Allah) said, "What prevented you that not you prostrate when I commanded you?" (Shaitaan) said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and You created him from clay."

Translations:

[And God] said: "What has kept thee from prostrating thyself when I commanded thee?" Answered [Iblis]: "I am better than he: Thou hast created me out of fire, whereas him Thou hast created out of clay."

(God) said: "What prevented thee from bowing down when I commanded thee?" He said: "I am better than he: Thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay."

He said: What hindered thee that thou didst not fall prostrate when I bade thee? (Iblis) said: I am better than him. Thou createdst me of fire while him Thou didst create of mud.

He said: What hindered thee that thou didst not submit when I commanded thee? He said: I am better than he; thou hast created me of fire while him Thou didst create of dust.

[ Allah ] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."

قَالَ فَاهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَاخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala faihbit minha fama yakoonu laka an tatakabbara feeha faokhruj innaka mina alssaghireena

Word by Word:

(Allah) said, "Then go down from it, for not it is for you that you be arrogant in it. So get out; indeed, you (are) of the disgraced ones."

Translations:

[God] said: "Down with thee, then, from this [state] -for it is not meet for thee to show arrogance here! Go forth, then: verily, among the humiliated shalt thou be!"

(God) said: "Get thee down from this: it is not for thee to be arrogant here: get out, for thou art of the meanest (of creatures)."

He said: Then go down hence! It is not for thee to show pride here, so go forth! Lo! thou art of those degraded.

He said: Then get forth from this (state), for it is not for thee to behave proudly therein. Go forth, therefore, surely thou art of the abject ones.

[ Allah ] said, "Descend from Paradise, for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased.

قَالَ أَنظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala anthirnee ila yawmi yubAAathoona

Word by Word:

(Shaitaan) said, "Give me respite till (the) Day they are raised up."

Translations:

Said [Iblis]: "Grant me a respite till the Day when all shall be raised from the dead."

He said: "Give me respite till the day they are raised up."

He said: Reprieve me till the day when they are raised (from the dead).

He said: Respite me till the day when they are raised.

[Satan] said, "Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنظَرِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala innaka mina almunthareena

Word by Word:

(Allah) said, "Indeed, you (are) of the ones given respite."

Translations:

[And God] replied: "Verily, thou shalt be among those who are granted a respite."

(God) said: "Be thou among those who have respite."

He said: Lo! thou art of those reprieved.

He said: Thou art surely of the respited ones.

[ Allah ] said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved."

قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Transliteration:

Qala fabima aghwaytanee laaqAAudanna lahum sirataka almustaqeema

Word by Word:

(Shaitaan) said, "Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit for them (on) Your straight path.

Translations:

[Whereupon Iblis] said: "Now that Thou hast thwarted me," shall most certainly lie in ambush for them all along Thy straight way,

He said: "Because thou hast thrown me out of the way, lo! I will lie in wait for them on thy straight way:

He said: Now, because Thou hast sent me astray, verily I shall lurk in ambush for them on Thy Right Path.

He said: As Thou hast adjudged me to be erring, I will certainly lie in wait for them in Thy straight path,

[Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.

ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَائِلِهِمْ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ

Transliteration:

Thumma laatiyannahum min bayni aydeehim wamin khalfihim waAAan aymanihim waAAan shama-ilihim wala tajidu aktharahum shakireena

Word by Word:

Then surely, I will come to them from before them and from behind them and from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them grateful."

Translations:

and shall most certainly fall upon them openly as well as in a manner beyond their ken, and from their right and from their left: and most of them Thou wilt find ungrateful."

"Then will I assault them from before them and behind them, from their right and their left: Nor wilt thou find, in most of them, gratitude (for thy mercies)."

Then I shall come upon them from before them and from behind them and from their right hands and from their left hands, and Thou wilt not find most of them beholden (unto Thee).

Then I shall certainly come upon them from before them and from behind them, and from their right and from their left; and Thou wilt not find most of them thankful.

Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."
