21 - The Prophets (Al-Anbya')

Order of Revelation: 73

قَالَ لَقَدْ كُنتُمْ أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمْ فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ

Transliteration:

Qala laqad kuntum antum waabaokum fee dalalin mubeenin

Word by Word:

He said, "Verily, you are [you] and your forefathers (were) in an error manifest."

Translations:

Said he: Indeed, you and your forefathers have obviously gone astray!"

He said, "Indeed ye have been in manifest error - ye and your fathers."

He said: Verily ye and your fathers were in plain error.

He said: Certainly you have been, you and your fathers, in manifest error.

He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error."

قَالُوا أَجِئْتَنَا بِالْحَقِّ أَمْ أَنتَ مِنَ اللَّاعِبِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo aji/tana bialhaqqi am anta mina allaAAibeena

Word by Word:

They said, "Have you come to with the truth, or you (are) of those who play?"

Translations:

They asked: Hast thou come unto us [with this claim] in all earnest - or art thou one of those jesters?''

They said, "Have you brought us the Truth, or are you one of those who jest?"

They said: Bringest thou unto us the truth, or art thou some jester?

They said: Hast thou brought us the truth, or art thou of the jesters?

They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?"

قَالَ بَل رَّبُّكُمْ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الَّذِي فَطَرَهُنَّ وَأَنَا عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكُم مِّنَ الشَّاهِدِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala bal rabbukum rabbu alssamawati waal-ardi allathee fatarahunna waana AAala thalikum mina alshshahideena

Word by Word:

He said, "Nay, your Lord (is the) Lord (of) the heavens and the earth, the One Who created them and I am to that of the witnesses.

Translations:

He answered: Nay, but your [true] Sustainer is the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth - He who has brought them into being: and I am one of those who bear witness to this [truth]!"

He said, "Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, He Who created them (from nothing): and I am a witness to this (Truth).

He said: Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them; and I am of those who testify unto that.

He said: Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them; and I am of those who bear witness to this.

He said, "[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify.

وَتَاللَّهِ لَأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَامَكُم بَعْدَ أَن تُوَلُّوا مُدْبِرِينَ

Transliteration:

WataAllahi laakeedanna asnamakum baAAda an tuwalloo mudbireena

Word by Word:

And by Allah surely, I will plan (against) your idols after [that] you go away turning (your) backs."

Translations:

And [he added to himself.] By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!"

"And by God, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs"..

And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs.

And, by Allah! I will certainly plan against your idols after you go away, turning your backs.

And [I swear] by Allah , I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away."

فَجَعَلَهُمْ جُذَاذًا إِلَّا كَبِيرًا لَّهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ يَرْجِعُونَ

Transliteration:

FajaAAalahum juthathan illa kabeeran lahum laAAallahum ilayhi yarjiAAoona

Word by Word:

So he made them (into) pieces except a large (one) of them, so that they may to it return.

Translations:

And then he broke those [idols] to pieces, [all] save the biggest of them, so that they might [be able to] turn to it.*

So he broke them to pieces, (all) but the biggest of them, that they might turn (and address themselves) to it.

Then he reduced them to fragments, all save the chief of them, that haply they might have recourse to it.

So he broke them into pieces, except the chief of them, that haply they might return to it.

So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question].

قَالُوا مَن فَعَلَ هَٰذَا بِآلِهَتِنَا إِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo man faAAala hatha bi-alihatina innahu lamina alththalimeena

Word by Word:

They said, "Who (has) done this to our gods? Indeed, he (is) of the wrongdoers."

Translations:

[When they saw what had happened,] they said: Who has done this to our gods? Verily, one of the worst wrongdoers is he!''

They said, "Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!"

They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer.

They said: Who has done this to our gods? Surely he is one of the unjust.

They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers."
