21 - The Prophets (Al-Anbya')

Order of Revelation: 73

قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا فَتًى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ

Transliteration:

Qaloo samiAAna fatan yathkuruhum yuqalu lahu ibraheemu

Word by Word:

They said, "We heard a youth mention them he is called Ibrahim."

Translations:

Said some [of them]: We heard a youth speak of these [gods with scorn]: he is called Abraham.''

They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: He is called Abraham."

They said: We heard a youth make mention of them, who is called Abraham.

They said: We heard a youth, who is called Abraham, speak of them.

They said, "We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham."

قَالُوا فَأْتُوا بِهِ عَلَىٰ أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُونَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo fa/too bihi AAala aAAyuni alnnasi laAAallahum yashhadoona

Word by Word:

They said, "Then bring him before (the) eyes (of) the people so that they may bear witness."

Translations:

[The others] said: Then bring him before the peoples eyes, so that they might bear witness [against him]!"

They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness."

They said: Then bring him (hither) before the people's eyes that they may testify.

They said: Then bring him before the people's eyes, perhaps they may bear witness.

They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify."

قَالُوا أَأَنتَ فَعَلْتَ هَٰذَا بِآلِهَتِنَا يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ

Transliteration:

Qaloo aanta faAAalta hatha bi-alihatina ya ibraheemu

Word by Word:

They said, "Have you done this to our gods O Ibrahim?"

Translations:

[And when he came.] they asked: Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?"

They said, "Art thou the one that did this with our gods, O Abraham?"

They said: Is it thou who hast done this to our gods, O Abraham?

They said: Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?

They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?"

قَالَ بَلْ فَعَلَهُ كَبِيرُهُمْ هَٰذَا فَاسْأَلُوهُمْ إِن كَانُوا يَنطِقُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala bal faAAalahu kabeeruhum hatha fais-aloohum in kanoo yantiqoona

Word by Word:

He said, "Nay, (some doer) did it. Their chief (is) this. So ask them if they (can) speak."

Translations:

He answered: Nay, it was this one, the biggest of them, that did it: but ask them [yourselves] - provided they can speak!"

He said: "Nay, this was done by - this is their biggest one! ask them, if they can speak intelligently!"

He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak.

He said: Surely (someone) has done it. The chief of them is this; so ask them, if they can speak.

He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."

فَرَجَعُوا إِلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ أَنتُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ

Transliteration:

FarajaAAoo ila anfusihim faqaloo innakum antumu alththalimoona

Word by Word:

So they returned to themselves and said, "Indeed, you [you] (are) the wrongdoers."

Translations:

And so they turned upon one another, saying, Behold, it is you who are doing wrong."

So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!"

Then gathered they apart and said: Lo! ye yourselves are the wrong-doers.

Then they turned to themselves and said: Surely you yourselves are wrongdoers;

So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers."

ثُمَّ نُكِسُوا عَلَىٰ رُءُوسِهِمْ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ يَنطِقُونَ

Transliteration:

Thumma nukisoo AAala ruoosihim laqad AAalimta ma haola-i yantiqoona

Word by Word:

Then they were turned on their heads, "Verily, you know not these (can) speak!"

Translations:

But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!"

Then were they confounded with shame: (they said), "Thou knowest full well that these (idols) do not speak!"

And they were utterly confounded, and they said: Well thou knowest that these speak not.

Then they were made to hang down their heads: Thou knowest indeed that they speak not.

Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!"
