21 - The Prophets (Al-Anbya')

Order of Revelation: 73

Transliteration:

Wa-itha raaka allatheena kafaroo in yattakhithoonaka illa huzuwan ahatha allathee yathkuru alihatakum wahum bithikri alrrahmani hum kafiroona

Word by Word:

And when you see those who disbelieve not they take you except (in) ridicule, "Is this the one who mentions your gods?" And they at (the) mention (of) the Most Gracious [they] (are) disbelievers.

Translations:

But [thus it is:] whenever they who are bent on denying the truth consider thee, they make thee but a target of their mockery, [saying to one another,] Is this the one who speaks [so contemptuously] of your gods?'' and yet, it is they themselves who, at [every] mention of the Most Gracious, are wont to deny the truth!

When the Unbelievers see thee, they treat thee not except with ridicule. "Is this," (they say), "the one who talks of your gods?" and they blaspheme at the mention of (God) Most Gracious!

And when those who disbelieve behold thee, they but choose thee out for mockery, (saying): Is this he who maketh mention of your gods? And they would deny all mention of the Beneficent.

And when those who disbelieve see thee, they treat thee not but with mockery: Is this he who speaks of your gods? And they deny when the Beneficent God is mentioned.

And when those who disbelieve see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one who insults your gods?" And they are, at the mention of the Most Merciful, disbelievers.

Is created the man of haste. I will show you My Signs so (do) not ask Me to hasten.

Man is a creature of haste; [but in time] I shall make obvious to you [the truth of] My messages: do not, then, ask Me to hasten [it]!

Man is a creature of haste: soon (enough) will I show you My Signs; then ye will not ask Me to hasten them!

Man is made of haste. I shall show you My portents, but ask Me not to hasten.

Man is created of haste. Soon will I show you My signs, so ask Me not to hasten them.

Man was created of haste. I will show you My signs, so do not impatiently urge Me.

And they say, "When (will be fulfilled) this promise, if you are truthful?"

They say: "When will this promise come to pass, if ye are telling the truth?"

And they say: When will this promise (be fulfilled), if ye are truthful?

And they say: When will this threat come to pass, if you are truthful?

And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"

If knew those who disbelieved (the) time (when) not they will avert from their faces the Fire and not from their backs and not they will be helped!

Translations:

If they but knew - they who are bent on denying the truth - [that there will come] a time when they will not be able to ward off the fire from their faces, nor from their backs, and will not find any succour!

If only the Unbelievers knew (the time) when they will not be able to ward off the fire from their faces, nor yet from their backs, and (when) no help can reach them!

If those who disbelieved but knew the time when they will not be able to drive off the fire from their faces and from their backs, and they will not be helped!

If those who disbelieve but knew the time when they will not be able to ward off the fire from their faces, nor from their backs, and they will not be helped!

If those who disbelieved but knew the time when they will not avert the Fire from their faces or from their backs and they will not be aided...

بَلْ تَأْتِيهِم بَغْتَةً فَتَبْهَتُهُمْ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ رَدَّهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ

Nay, it will come to them unexpectedly and bewilder them, then not they will be able to repel it, and not they will be given respite.

Translations:

Nay, but [the Last Hour] will come upon them of a sudden, and will stupefy them: and they will be unable to avert it, and neither wilt they be allowed any respite.

Nay, it may come to them all of a sudden and confound them: no power will they have then to avert it, nor will they (then) get respite.

Nay, but it will come upon them unawares so that it will stupefy them, and they will be unable to repel it, neither will they be reprieved.

Nay, it will come to them all of a sudden and confound them, so they will not have the power to avert it, nor will they be respited.

Rather, it will come to them unexpectedly and bewilder them, and they will not be able to repel it, nor will they be reprieved.

Transliteration:

Word by Word:

And verily, were mocked Messengers before you then surrounded those who mocked from them what they used at it (to) mock.

Translations:

And, indeed, [O Muhammad, even] before thy time have [God's] apostles been derided - but those who scoffed at them were [in the end] overwhelmed by the very thing which they had been wont to deride.

Mocked were (many) apostle before thee; But their scoffers were hemmed in by the thing that they mocked.

Messengers before thee, indeed, were mocked, but that whereat they mocked surrounded those who scoffed at them.

And messengers before thee were indeed mocked, so there befell those of them who scoffed, that whereat they scoffed.

And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
