19 - Mary (Maryam)

Order of Revelation: 44

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ يَا أَبَتِ لِمَ تَعْبُدُ مَا لَا يَسْمَعُ وَلَا يُبْصِرُ وَلَا يُغْنِي عَنكَ شَيْئًا

Transliteration:

Ith qala li-abeehi ya abati lima taAAbudu ma la yasmaAAu wala yubsiru wala yughnee AAanka shay-an

Word by Word:

When he said to his father, "O my father! Why (do) you worship that which not hears and not sees and not benefits [to] you (in) anything?

Translations:

when he spoke [thus] unto his father: "O my father! Why dost thou worship something that neither hears nor sees and can be of no avail whatever to thee?

Behold, he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not and seeth not, and can profit thee nothing?

When he said unto his father: O my father! Why worshippest thou that which heareth not nor seeth, nor can in aught avail thee?

When he said to his sire: O my sire, why worshippest thou that which hears not, or sees, or can it avail thee aught?

[Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?

يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي قَدْ جَاءَنِي مِنَ الْعِلْمِ مَا لَمْ يَأْتِكَ فَاتَّبِعْنِي أَهْدِكَ صِرَاطًا سَوِيًّا

Transliteration:

Ya abati innee qad jaanee mina alAAilmi ma lam ya/tika faittabiAAnee ahdika siratan sawiyyan

Word by Word:

O my father! Indeed, [I] verily (has) come to me of the knowledge what not came to you, so follow I will guide you (to) the path even.

Translations:

"O my father! Behold, there has indeed come to me [a ray] of knowledge such as has never yet come unto thee: follow me, then; I shall guide thee onto a perfect way.

"O my father! to me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a way that is even and straight.

O my father! Lo! there hath come unto me of knowledge that which came not unto thee. So follow me, and I will lead thee on a right path.

O my sire, to me indeed has come the knowledge which has not come to thee; so follow me, I will guide thee on a right path.

O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.

يَا أَبَتِ لَا تَعْبُدِ الشَّيْطَانَ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَصِيًّا

Transliteration:

Ya abati la taAAbudi alshshaytana inna alshshaytana kana lilrrahmani AAasiyyan

Word by Word:

O my father! (Do) not worship the Shaitaan. Indeed, the Shaitaan is to the Most Gracious disobedient.

Translations:

"O my father! Do not worship Satan-for, verily, Satan is a rebel against the Most Gracious!

"O my father! serve not Satan: for Satan is a rebel against (God) Most Gracious.

O my father! Serve not the devil. Lo! the devil is a rebel unto the Beneficent.

O my sire, serve not the devil. Surely the devil is disobedient to the Beneficent.

O my father, do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.

يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَن يَمَسَّكَ عَذَابٌ مِّنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَلِيًّا

Transliteration:

Ya abati innee akhafu an yamassaka AAathabun mina alrrahmani fatakoona lilshshyatani waliyyan

Word by Word:

O my father! Indeed, I [I] fear that will touch you a punishment from the Most Gracious, so you would be to the Shaitaan a friend."

Translations:

O my father! I dread lest a chastisement from the Most Gracious befall thee, and then thou wilt become [aware of having been] close unto Satan!"

"O my father! I fear lest a Penalty afflict thee from (God) Most Gracious, so that thou become to Satan a friend."

O my father! Lo! I fear lest a punishment from the Beneficent overtake thee so that thou become a comrade of the devil.

O my sire, surely I fear lest a punishment from the Beneficent should afflict thee, so that thou become a friend of the devil.

O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."

قَالَ أَرَاغِبٌ أَنتَ عَنْ آلِهَتِي يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ لَأَرْجُمَنَّكَ وَاهْجُرْنِي مَلِيًّا

Transliteration:

Qala araghibun anta AAan alihatee ya ibraheemu la-in lam tantahi laarjumannaka waohjurnee maliyyan

Word by Word:

He said, "Do you hate (from) my gods, O Ibrahim? Surely, if not you desist surely, I will stone you, so leave me (for) a prolonged time."

Translations:

He answered: "Dost thou dislike my gods, O Abraham? Indeed, if thou desist not, I shall most certainly cause thee to be stoned to death! Now begone from me for good!"

(The father) replied: "Dost thou hate my gods, O Abraham? If thou forbear not, I will indeed stone thee: Now get away from me for a good long while!"

He said: Rejectest thou my gods, O Abraham? If thou cease not, I shall surely stone thee. Depart from me a long while!

He said: Dislikest thou my gods, O Abraham? If thou desist not, I will certainly drive thee away. And leave me for a time.

[His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time."

قَالَ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّي إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِي حَفِيًّا

Transliteration:

Qala salamun AAalayka saastaghfiru laka rabbee innahu kana bee hafiyyan

Word by Word:

He said, "Peace (be) on you. I will ask forgiveness for you (from) my Lord. Indeed, He is to me Ever Gracious.

Translations:

[Abraham] replied: "Peace be upon thee! I shall ask my Sustainer to forgive thee: for, behold, He has always been kind unto me.

Abraham said: "Peace be on thee: I will pray to my Lord for thy forgiveness: for He is to me Most Gracious.

He said: Peace be unto thee! I shall ask forgiveness of my Lord for thee. Lo! He was ever gracious unto me.

He said: Peace be to thee! I shall pray my Lord to forgive thee. Surely He is ever Kind to me.

[Abraham] said, "Peace will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
