19 - Mary (Maryam)

Order of Revelation: 44

فَنَادَاهَا مِن تَحْتِهَا أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا

Transliteration:

Fanadaha min tahtiha alla tahzanee qad jaAAala rabbuki tahtaki sariyyan

Word by Word:

So cried to her from beneath her, "That (do) not grieve verily, (has) placed your Lord beneath you, a stream.

Translations:

Thereupon [a voice] called out to her from beneath that [palm-tree]: "Grieve not! Thy Sustainer has provided a rivulet [running] beneath thee;

But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee;

Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee,

So a voice came to her from beneath her: Grieve not, surely thy Lord has provided a stream beneath three.

But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.

وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا

Transliteration:

Wahuzzee ilayki bijithAAi alnnakhlati tusaqit AAalayki rutaban janiyyan

Word by Word:

And shake towards you (the) trunk (of) the date-palm, it will drop upon you fresh dates ripe.

Translations:

and shake the trunk of the palm-tree towards thee: it will drop fresh, ripe dates upon thee.

"And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee.

And shake the trunk of the palm-tree toward thee, thou wilt cause ripe dates to fall upon thee.

And shake towards thee the trunk of the palm-tree, it will drop on thee fresh ripe dates.

And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.

فَكُلِي وَاشْرَبِي وَقَرِّي عَيْنًا فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ الْبَشَرِ أَحَدًا فَقُولِي إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ صَوْمًا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ الْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا

Transliteration:

Fakulee waishrabee waqarree AAaynan fa-imma tarayinna mina albashari ahadan faqoolee innee nathartu lilrrahmani sawman falan okallima alyawma insiyyan

Word by Word:

So eat and drink and cool (your) eyes. And if you see from human being anyone then say, "Indeed, I [I] have vowed to the Most Gracious a fast, so not I will speak today (to any) human being."

Translations:

Eat, then, and drink, and let thine eye be gladdened! And if thou shouldst see any human being, convey this unto him: `Behold, abstinence from speech have I vowed unto the Most Gracious; hence, I may not speak today to any mortal.

"So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man, say, 'I have vowed a fast to (God) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into not talk with any human being'"

So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal.

So eat and drink and cool the eye. Then if thou seest any mortal, say: Surely I have vowed a fast to the Beneficent, so I will not speak to any man to-day.

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.' "

فَأَتَتْ بِهِ قَوْمَهَا تَحْمِلُهُ قَالُوا يَا مَرْيَمُ لَقَدْ جِئْتِ شَيْئًا فَرِيًّا

Transliteration:

Faatat bihi qawmaha tahmiluhu qaloo ya maryamu laqad ji/ti shay-an fariyyan

Word by Word:

Then she came with him (to) her people, carrying him. They said, "O Maryam! Certainly, you (have) brought an amazing thing.

Translations:

And in time she returned to her people, carrying the child with her. They said: "O Mary! Thou hast indeed done an amazing thing!

At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms). They said: "O Mary! truly an amazing thing hast thou brought!

Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.

Then she came to her people with him, carrying him. They said: O Mary, thou has indeed brought a strange thing!

Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.

يَا أُخْتَ هَارُونَ مَا كَانَ أَبُوكِ امْرَأَ سَوْءٍ وَمَا كَانَتْ أُمُّكِ بَغِيًّا

Transliteration:

Ya okhta haroona ma kana abooki imraa saw-in wama kanat ommuki baghiyyan

Word by Word:

O sister (of) Harun! Not was your father an evil man, and not was your mother unchaste."

Translations:

O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a wicked man, nor was thy mother a loose woman!"

"O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!"

O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a wicked man nor was thy mother a harlot.

O sister of Aaron, thy father was not a wicked man, nor was thy mother an unchaste woman!

O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."

فَأَشَارَتْ إِلَيْهِ قَالُوا كَيْفَ نُكَلِّمُ مَن كَانَ فِي الْمَهْدِ صَبِيًّا

Transliteration:

Faasharat ilayhi qaloo kayfa nukallimu man kana fee almahdi sabiyyan

Word by Word:

Then she pointed to him. They said, "How (can) we speak (to one) who is in the cradle, a child?"

Translations:

Thereupon she pointed to him. They exclaimed: "How can we talk to one who [as yet] is a little boy in the cradle?"

But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?"

Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy?

But she pointed to him. They said: How should we speak to one who is a child in the cradle?

So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?"
