23 - The Believers (Al-Mu'minun)

Order of Revelation: 74

Transliteration:

Qala in labithtum illa qaleelan law annakum kuntum taAAlamoona

Word by Word:

He will say, "Not you stayed but a little, if only you [you] knew.

Translations:

[Whereupon] He will say: You have spent there but a short while: had you but known [how short it was to be]!

He will say: "Ye stayed not but a little,- if ye had only known!

He will say: Ye tarried but a little if ye only knew.

He will say: You tarried but a little -- if you only knew!

He will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known.

Transliteration:

Afahasibtum annama khalaqnakum AAabathan waannakum ilayna la turjaAAoona

Word by Word:

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that you to Us not will be returned?"

Translations:

Did you, then, think that We created you in mere idle play, and that you would not have to return to Us?"

"Did ye then think that We had created you in jest, and that ye would not be brought back to Us (for account)?"

Deemed ye then that We had created you for naught, and that ye would not be returned unto Us?

Do you then think that We have created you in vain, and that you will not be returned to us?

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"

Transliteration:

FataAAala Allahu almaliku alhaqqu la ilaha illa huwa rabbu alAAarshi alkareemi

Word by Word:

So exalted is Allah, the King, the Truth. (There is) no god except Him, (the) Lord (of) the Throne Honorable.

Translations:

[KNOW,] then, [that] God is sublimely exalted, the Ultimate Sovereign, the Ultimate Truth: there is no deity save Him, the Sustainer, in bountiful almightiness enthroned!

Therefore exalted be God, the King, the Reality: there is no god but He, the Lord of the Throne of Honour!

Now Allah be Exalted, the True King! There is no Allah save Him, the Lord of the Throne of Grace.

So exalted be Allah, the True King! No God is there but He, the Lord of the Throne of Grace.

So exalted is Allah , the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.

Transliteration:

Waman yadAAu maAAa Allahi ilahan akhara la burhana lahu bihi fa-innama hisabuhu AAinda rabbihi innahu la yuflihu alkafiroona

Word by Word:

And whoever invokes with Allah god other, no proof for him in it. Then only his account (is) with his Lord. Indeed, [he] not will succeed the disbelievers.

Translations:

Hence, he who invokes, side by side with God, any other deity [- a deity] for whose existence he has no evidence - shall but find his reckoning with his Sustainer: [and,] verily, such deniers of the truth will never attain to a happy state!

If anyone invokes, besides God, Any other god, he has no authority therefor; and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the Unbelievers will fail to win through!

He who crieth unto any other god along with Allah hath no proof thereof. His reckoning is only with his Lord. Lo! disbelievers will not be successful.

And whoever invokes, besides Allah, another god -- he has no proof of this -- his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely the disbelievers will not be successful.

And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.

Transliteration:

Waqul rabbi ighfir wairham waanta khayru alrrahimeena

Word by Word:

And say, "My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, and You (are the) Best (of) those who show

Translations:

Hence, [O believer,] say: O my Sustainer! Grant [me] forgiveness and bestow Thy mercy [upon me]: for Thou art the truest bestower of mercy!"

So say: "O my Lord! grant Thou forgiveness and mercy for Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!"

And (O Muhammad) say: My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for Thou art Best of all who show mercy.

And say: My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and Thou art the Best of those who show mercy.

And, [O Muhammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful."
