23 - The Believers (Al-Mu'minun)

Order of Revelation: 74

قَالَ اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ

Transliteration:

Qala ikhsaoo feeha wala tukallimooni

Word by Word:

He (will) say, "Remain despised in it and (do) not speak to

Translations:

[But] He will say: Away with you into this [ignominy]! And speak no more unto Me!

He will say: "Be ye driven into it (with ignominy)! And speak ye not to Me!

He saith: Begone therein, and speak not unto Me.

He will say: Begone therein, and speak not to Me.

He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.

إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِي يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Transliteration:

Innahu kana fareequn min AAibadee yaqooloona rabbana amanna faighfir lana wairhamna waanta khayru alrrahimeena

Word by Word:

Indeed, (there) was a party of My slaves (who) said, "Our Lord! We believe, so forgive us and have mercy on us, and You (are) best (of) those who show

Translations:

Behold, there were among My servants such as would pray, 'O our Sustainer! We have come to believe [in Thee]; forgive, then, our sins and bestow Thy mercy on us: for Thou art the truest bestower of mercy!'

"A part of My servants there was, who used to pray 'our Lord! we believe; then do Thou forgive us, and have mercy upon us: For Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!"

Lo! there was a party of My slaves who said: Our Lord! We believe, therefor forgive us and have mercy on us for Thou art Best of all who show mercy;

Surely there was a party of My servants who said: Our Lord, we believe, so forgive us and have mercy on us, and Thou are the Best of those who show mercy.

Indeed, there was a party of My servants who said, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.'

فَاتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا حَتَّىٰ أَنسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِي وَكُنتُم مِّنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ

Transliteration:

Faittakhathtumoohum sikhriyyan hatta ansawkum thikree wakuntum minhum tadhakoona

Word by Word:

But you took them (in) mockery until they made you forget My and you used (to) at them laugh.

Translations:

- but you made them a target of your derision to the point where it made you forget all remembrance of Me; and you went on and on laughing at them.

"But ye treated them with ridicule, so much so that (ridicule of) them made you forget My Message while ye were laughing at them!

But ye chose them for a laughing-stock until they caused you to forget remembrance of Me, while ye laughed at them.

But you ridiculed them, until they made you forget remembrance of Me, and you used to laugh at them.

But you took them in mockery to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.

إِنِّي جَزَيْتُهُمُ الْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ

Transliteration:

Innee jazaytuhumu alyawma bima sabaroo annahum humu alfa-izoona

Word by Word:

Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day because they were patient, indeed, they [they] (are) the successful ones.

Translations:

[But,] behold, today I have rewarded them for their patience in adversity: verily, it is they, they who have achieved a triumph!"

"I have rewarded them this Day for their patience and constancy: they are indeed the ones that have achieved Bliss..."

Lo! I have rewarded them this day forasmuch as they were steadfast in that they, even they, are the triumphant.

Surely I have rewarded them this day because they were patient, that they are the achievers.

Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance - that they are the attainers [of success]."

قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala kam labithtum fee al-ardi AAadada sineena

Word by Word:

He will say, "How long did you remain in the earth, (in) number (of) years?"

Translations:

[And] He will ask [the doomed]: What number of years have you spent on earth?"

He will say: "What number of years did ye stay on earth?"

He will say: How long tarried ye in the earth, counting by years?

He will say: How many years did you tarry in the earth?

[ Allah ] will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?"

قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَاسْأَلِ الْعَادِّينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo labithna yawman aw baAAda yawmin fais-ali alAAaddeena

Word by Word:

They will say, "We remained a day or a part (of) a day; but ask those who keep count."

Translations:

They will answer: 'We have spent there a day, or part of a day; but ask those who [are able to] count [time]¬Ö"

They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day: but ask those who keep account."

They will say: We tarried by a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep count!

They will say: We tarried a day or part of a day, but ask those who keep account.

They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate."
