23 - The Believers (Al-Mu'minun)

Order of Revelation: 74

وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنشَأَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالْأَبْصَارَ وَالْأَفْئِدَةَ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ

Transliteration:

Wahuwa allathee anshaa lakumu alssamAAa waal-absara waal-af-idata qaleelan ma tashkuroona

Word by Word:

And He (is) the One Who produced for you the hearing and the sight and the feeling; little (is) what you give thanks.

Translations:

[O MEN! Pay heed to God's messages,] for it is He who has endowed you with hearing, and sight, and minds: [yet] how seldom are you grateful!

It is He Who has created for you (the faculties of) hearing, sight, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give!

He it is Who hath created for you ears and eyes and hearts. Small thanks give ye!

And He it is Who made for you the ears and the eyes and the hearts. Little it is that you give thanks!

And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.

وَهُوَ الَّذِي ذَرَأَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

Transliteration:

Wahuwa allathee tharaakum fee al-ardi wa-ilayhi tuhsharoona

Word by Word:

And He (is) the One Who multiplied you in the earth and to Him you will be gathered.

Translations:

And He it is who has caused you to multiply on earth; and unto Him you shall be gathered.

And He has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered back.

And He it is Who hath sown you broadcast in the earth, and unto Him ye will be gathered.

And He it is Who multiplied you in the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.

And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَلَهُ اخْتِلَافُ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Transliteration:

Wahuwa allathee yuhyee wayumeetu walahu ikhtilafu allayli waalnnahari afala taAAqiloona

Word by Word:

And He (is) the One Who gives life and causes death and for Him (is the) alternation (of) the night and the day. Then will not you reason?

Translations:

And He it is who grants life and deals death; and to Him is due the alternation of night and day. Will you not, then, use your reason?

It is He Who gives life and death, and to Him (is due) the alternation of Night and Day: will ye not then understand?

And He it is Who giveth life and causeth death, and His is the difference of night and day. Have ye then no sense?

And He it is Who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Do you not then understand?

And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?

بَلْ قَالُوا مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ الْأَوَّلُونَ

Transliteration:

Bal qaloo mithla ma qala al-awwaloona

Word by Word:

Nay, they say (the) like (of) what said the former (people).

Translations:

But nay, they speak as the people of olden times did speak:

On the contrary they say things similar to what the ancients said.

Nay, but they say the like of that which said the men of old;

Nay, they say the like of what the ancients said.

Rather, they say like what the former peoples said.

قَالُوا أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo a-itha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman a-inna lamabAAoothoona

Word by Word:

They said, "What! When we are dead and become dust and bones, would we surely be resurrected?

Translations:

they say: What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead?

They say: "What! when we die and become dust and bones, could we really be raised up again?

They say: When we are dead and have become (mere) dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again?

They say: When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up?

They said, "When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَآبَاؤُنَا هَٰذَا مِن قَبْلُ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

Transliteration:

Laqad wuAAidna nahnu waabaona hatha min qablu in hatha illa asateeru al-awwaleena

Word by Word:

Verily, we have been promised [we] and our forefathers this before; not (is) this but (the) tales (of) the former (people)."

Translations:

Indeed, this [very thing] we have been promised - we and our forefathers - long ago! This is nothing but fables of ancient times!"

"Such things have been promised to us and to our fathers before! they are nothing but tales of the ancients!"

We were already promised this, we and our forefathers. Lo! this is naught but fables of the men of old.

We are indeed promised this, and (so were) our fathers before. This is naught but stories of those of old!

We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples."
