23 - The Believers (Al-Mu'minun)

Order of Revelation: 74

قَدْ كَانَتْ آيَاتِي تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُمْ عَلَىٰ أَعْقَابِكُمْ تَنكِصُونَ

Transliteration:

Qad kanat ayatee tutla AAalaykum fakuntum AAala aAAqabikum tankisoona

Word by Word:

Verily, were My Verses recited to you, but you used (to) on your heels turn back

Translations:

Time and again were My messages conveyed unto you, but [every time] you would turn about on your heels

"My Signs used to be rehearsed to you, but ye used to turn back on your heels-

My revelations were recited unto you, but ye used to turn back on your heels,

My messages were indeed recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels

My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels

مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ

Transliteration:

Mustakbireena bihi samiran tahjuroona

Word by Word:

(Being) arrogant about it, conversing by night, speaking evil."

Translations:

[and,] impelled by your arrogance, you would talk senselessly far into the night."

"In arrogance: talking nonsense about the (Qur'an), like one telling fables by night."

In scorn thereof. Nightly did ye rave together.

Haughtily, passing nights in talking nonsense about it.

In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil.

أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا الْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَاءَهُم مَّا لَمْ يَأْتِ آبَاءَهُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

Transliteration:

Afalam yaddabbaroo alqawla am jaahum ma lam ya/ti abaahumu al-awwaleena

Word by Word:

Then, do not they ponder the Word or has come to them what not (had) come (to) their forefathers?

Translations:

Have they, then, never tried to understand this word [of God]? Or has there [now] come to them something that never came to their forefathers of old?

Do they not ponder over the Word (of God), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old?

Have they not pondered the Word, or hath that come unto them which came not unto their fathers of old?

Do they not then ponder the Word? Or has there come to them that which did not come to their fathers of old?

Then have they not reflected over the Qur'an, or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?

أَمْ لَمْ يَعْرِفُوا رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُ مُنكِرُونَ

Transliteration:

Am lam yaAArifoo rasoolahum fahum lahu munkiroona

Word by Word:

Or (do) not they recognize their Messenger, so they (are) rejecting him?

Translations:

Or is it, perchance, that they have not recognized their Apostle, and so they disavow him?

Or do they not recognise their Apostle, that they deny him?

Or know they not their messenger, and so reject him?

Or do they not recognize their Messenger, that they deny him?

Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ بِهِ جِنَّةٌ بَلْ جَاءَهُم بِالْحَقِّ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَارِهُونَ

Transliteration:

Am yaqooloona bihi jinnatun bal jaahum bialhaqqi waaktharuhum lilhaqqi karihoona

Word by Word:

Or they say, "In him (is) madness?" Nay, he brought them the truth, but most of them to the truth, (are) averse.

Translations:

Or do they say. There is madness in him"? Nay, he has brought them the truth - and the truth do most of them detest!

Or do they say, "He is possessed"? Nay, he has brought them the Truth, but most of them hate the Truth.

Or say they: There is a madness in him? Nay, but he bringeth them the Truth; and most of them are haters of the Truth.

Or say they: There is madness in him? Nay, he has brought them the Truth, and most of them hate the Truth.

Or do they say, "In him is madness?" Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse.

وَلَوِ اتَّبَعَ الْحَقُّ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ بَلْ أَتَيْنَاهُم بِذِكْرِهِمْ فَهُمْ عَن ذِكْرِهِم مُّعْرِضُونَ

Transliteration:

Walawi ittabaAAa alhaqqu ahwaahum lafasadati alssamawatu waal-ardu waman feehinna bal ataynahum bithikrihim fahum AAan thikrihim muAAridoona

Word by Word:

But if (had) followed the truth their desires, surely (would) have been corrupted the heavens and the earth and whoever (is) therein. Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they, from their reminder, (are) turning away.

Translations:

But if the truth were in accord with their own likes and dislikes, the heavens and the earth would surely have fallen into ruin, and all that lives in them [would long ago have perished]! Nay, [in this divine writ] We have conveyed unto them all that they ought to bear in mind: and from this their reminder they [heedlessly] turn away!

If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption! Nay, We have sent them their admonition, but they turn away from their admonition.

And if the Truth had followed their desires, verily the heavens and the earth and whosoever is therein had been corrupted. Nay, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder they now turn away.

And if the Truth follow their desires, the heavens and the earth and all those who are therein would perish. Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder.

But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.
