23 - The Believers (Al-Mu'minun)

Order of Revelation: 74

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ وَإِن كُنَّا لَمُبْتَلِينَ

Transliteration:

Inna fee thalika laayatin wa-in kunna lamubtaleena

Word by Word:

Indeed, in that surely (are) Signs, and indeed, We are surely testing.

Translations:

In this [story], behold, there are messages indeed [for those who think]: for, verily, We always put [man] to a test.

Verily in this there are Signs (for men to understand); (thus) do We try (men).

Lo! herein verily are portents, for lo! We are ever putting (mankind) to the test.

Surely there are signs in this, and surely We are ever trying (men).

Indeed in that are signs, and indeed, We are ever testing [Our servants].

ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَا مِن بَعْدِهِمْ قَرْنًا آخَرِينَ

Transliteration:

Thumma ansha/na min baAAdihim qarnan akhareena

Word by Word:

Then We produced after them a generation another.

Translations:

AND AFTER those [people of old] We gave rise to new generations;

Then We raised after them another generation.

Then, after them, We brought forth another generation;

Then We raised after them another generation.

Then We produced after them a generation of others.

فَأَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Transliteration:

Faarsalna feehim rasoolan minhum ani oAAbudoo Allaha ma lakum min ilahin ghayruhu afala tattaqoona

Word by Word:

And We sent among them a Messenger from themselves [that] "Worship Allah; not for you (is) any god other than Him. Then will not you fear?"

Translations:

and [every time] We sent unto them an apostle from among themselves, [he told them:] Worship God [alone]: you have no deity other than Him. Will you not, then, become conscious of Him?"

And We sent to them an apostle from among themselves, (saying), "Worship God! ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?"

And we sent among them a messenger of their own, saying: Serve Allah, Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?

So We sent among them a messenger from among them, saying: Serve Allah -- you have no God other than Him. Will you not guard against evil?

And We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allah ; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"

وَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِهِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِلِقَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ وَأَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يَأْكُلُ مِمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ وَيَشْرَبُ مِمَّا تَشْرَبُونَ

Transliteration:

Waqala almalao min qawmihi allatheena kafaroo wakaththaboo biliqa-i al-akhirati waatrafnahum fee alhayati alddunya ma hatha illa basharun mithlukum ya/kulu mimma ta/kuloona minhu wayashrabu mimma tashraboona

And said the chiefs of his people who disbelieved and denied (the) meeting (of) the Hereafter, while We had given them in the life (of) the world, "Not (is) this but a man like you. He eats of what you eat [from it], and he drinks of what you drink.

Translations:

And [every time] the great ones among his people, who refused to acknowledge the truth and gave the lie to the announcement of a life to come - [simply] because We had granted them ease and plenty in [their] worldly life, and they had become corrupted by it [every time] they would say: This [man] is nothing hut a mortal like yourselves, eating of what you eat, and drinking of what you drink:

And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and on whom We had bestowed the good things of this life, said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: he eats of that of which ye eat, and drinks of wha t ye drink.

And the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink.

And the chiefs of His people who disbelieved and called the meeting of the Hereafter a lie, and whom We had given plenty to enjoy in this world's life, said: This is only a mortal like you, eating of that whereof you eat and drinking of what you drink.

And the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the worldly life said, "This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink.

وَلَئِنْ أَطَعْتُم بَشَرًا مِّثْلَكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّخَاسِرُونَ

Transliteration:

Wala-in ataAAtum basharan mithlakum innakum ithan lakhasiroona

Word by Word:

And surely if you obey a man like you, indeed, you then surely (will be) losers.

Translations:

and, indeed, if you pay heed to a mortal like yourselves, you will surely be the losers!

"If ye obey a man like yourselves, behold, it is certain ye will be lost.

If ye were to obey a mortal like yourselves, then, lo! ye surely would be losers.

And if you obey a mortal like yourselves, then surely you are losers.

And if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.

أَيَعِدُكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ إِذَا مِتُّمْ وَكُنتُمْ تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَنَّكُم مُّخْرَجُونَ

Transliteration:

AyaAAidukum annakum itha mittum wakuntum turaban waAAithaman annakum mukhrajoona

Word by Word:

Does he promise you - that you when you are dead and you become dust and bones that you (will be) brought forth?

Translations:

Does he promise you that, after you have died and become [mere] dust and bones, you shall be brought forth [to a new life]?

"Does he promise that when ye die and become dust and bones, ye shall be brought forth (again)?

Doth he promise you that you, when ye are dead and have become dust and bones, will (again) be brought forth?

Does he promise you that, when you are dead and become dust and bones, you will then be brought forth?

Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]?
