27 - The Ant (Al-Naml)

Order of Revelation: 48

إِنَّهُ مِن سُلَيْمَانَ وَإِنَّهُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration:

Innahu min sulaymana wa-innahu bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi

Word by Word:

Indeed, it (is) from Sulaiman and indeed it (is), "In the name (of) Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,

Translations:

Behold, it is from Solomon, and it says, 'In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Dispenser of Grace:

"It is from Solomon, and is (as follows): 'In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful:

Lo! it is from Solomon, and lo! it is: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful;

It is from Solomon, and it is in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful:

Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it reads: 'In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,

أَلَّا تَعْلُوا عَلَيَّ وَأْتُونِي مُسْلِمِينَ

Transliteration:

Alla taAAloo AAalayya wa/toonee muslimeena

Word by Word:

That not exalt yourselves against me, but come to me (in) submission."

Translations:

[God says:] Exalt not yourselves against Me, but come unto Me in willing surrender!' "

"'Be ye not arrogant against me, but come to me in submission (to the true Religion).'"

Exalt not yourselves against me, but come unto me as those who surrender.

Proclaiming, Exalt not yourselves against me and come to me in submission.

Be not haughty with me but come to me in submission [as Muslims].' "

قَالَتْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِي فِي أَمْرِي مَا كُنتُ قَاطِعَةً أَمْرًا حَتَّىٰ تَشْهَدُونِ

Transliteration:

Qalat ya ayyuha almalao aftoonee fee amree ma kuntu qatiAAatan amran hatta tashhadoona

Word by Word:

She said, "O chiefs! Advise me in my affair. Not I would be the one to decide any matter until you are present with me."

Translations:

She added: O you nobles! Give me your opinion on the problem with which I am now faced; I would never make a [weighty] decision unless you are present with me."

She said: "Ye chiefs! advise me in (this) my affair: no affair have I decided except in your presence."

She said: O chieftains! Pronounce for me in my case. I decide no case till ye are present with me.

She said: O chiefs, advise me respecting my affair; I never decide an affair until you are in my presence.

She said, "O eminent ones, advise me in my affair. I would not decide a matter until you witness [for] me."

قَالُوا نَحْنُ أُولُو قُوَّةٍ وَأُولُو بَأْسٍ شَدِيدٍ وَالْأَمْرُ إِلَيْكِ فَانظُرِي مَاذَا تَأْمُرِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo nahnu oloo quwwatin waoloo ba/sin shadeedin waal-amru ilayki faonthuree matha ta/mureena

Word by Word:

They said, "We (are) possessors (of) strength and possessors (of) might great, and the command (is) up to you, so look what you will command."

Translations:

They answered: We are endowed with power and with mighty prowess in war - but the command is thine; consider, then, what thou wouldst command."

They said: "We are endued with strength, and given to vehement war: but the command is with thee; so consider what thou wilt command."

They said: We are lords of might and lords of great prowess, but it is for thee to command; so consider what thou wilt command.

They said: We are possessors of strength and possessors of mighty prowess. And the command is thine, so consider what thou wilt command.

They said, "We are men of strength and of great military might, but the command is yours, so see what you will command."

قَالَتْ إِنَّ الْمُلُوكَ إِذَا دَخَلُوا قَرْيَةً أَفْسَدُوهَا وَجَعَلُوا أَعِزَّةَ أَهْلِهَا أَذِلَّةً وَكَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ

Transliteration:

Qalat inna almulooka itha dakhaloo qaryatan afsadooha wajaAAaloo aAAizzata ahliha athillatan wakathalika yafAAaloona

Word by Word:

She said, "Indeed, the kings, when they enter a town they ruin it and make (the) most honorable (of) its people (the) lowest. And thus they do.

Translations:

Said she: Verily, whenever kings enter a country they corrupt it, and turn the noblest of its people into the most abject. And this is the way they [always] behave?

She said: "Kings, when they enter a country, despoil it, and make the noblest of its people its meanest thus do they behave.

She said: Lo! kings, when they enter a township, ruin it and make the honour of its people shame. Thus will they do.

She said: Surely the kings, when they enter a town, ruin it and make the noblest of its people to be low; and thus they do.

She said, "Indeed kings - when they enter a city, they ruin it and render the honored of its people humbled. And thus do they do.

وَإِنِّي مُرْسِلَةٌ إِلَيْهِم بِهَدِيَّةٍ فَنَاظِرَةٌ بِمَ يَرْجِعُ الْمُرْسَلُونَ

Transliteration:

Wa-innee mursilatun ilayhim bihadiyyatin fanathiratun bima yarjiAAu almursaloona

Word by Word:

But indeed, I am going to send to them a gift and see with what return the messengers."

Translations:

Hence, behold, I am going to send a gift to those [people], and await whatever [answer] the envoys bring back."

"But I am going to send him a present, and (wait) to see with what (answer) return (my) ambassadors."

But lo! I am going to send a present unto them, and to see with what (answer) the messengers return.

And surely I am going to send them a present, and to see what (answer) the messengers bring back.

But indeed, I will send to them a gift and see with what [reply] the messengers will return."
