37 - The Arrangers (Al-Saffat)

Order of Revelation: 56

وَقِفُوهُمْ إِنَّهُم مَّسْئُولُونَ

Transliteration:

Waqifoohum innahum masooloona

Word by Word:

And stop them; indeed, they (are) to be questioned."

Translations:

and halt them [there]!" [And then,] behold, they shall be asked,

"But stop them, for they must be asked:

And stop them, for they must be questioned.

And stop them, for they shall be questioned:

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ

Transliteration:

Ma lakum la tanasaroona

Word by Word:

"What (is) for you? (Why) not you help one another?"

Translations:

How is it that [now] you cannot succour one another?"

"'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"

What aileth you that ye help not one another?

What is the matter with you that you help not one another?

[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

بَلْ هُمُ الْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ

Transliteration:

Bal humu alyawma mustaslimoona

Word by Word:

Nay, they (on) that Day (will) surrender.

Translations:

Nay, but on that Day they would willingly surrender [to God];

Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);

Nay, but this day they make full submission.

Nay, on that day they will be submissive.

But they, that Day, are in surrender.

وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ

Transliteration:

Waaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona

Word by Word:

And will approach some of them to others questioning one another.

Translations:

but [since it will be too late,] they will turn upon one another, demanding of each other [to relieve them of the burden of their past sins].

And they will turn to one another, and question one another.

And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.

And some of them will turn to others mutually questioning --

And they will approach one another blaming each other.

قَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ الْيَمِينِ

Transliteration:

Qaloo innakum kuntum ta/toonana AAani alyameeni

Word by Word:

They will say, "Indeed, you [you] used (to) come (to) us from the right."

Translations:

Some [of them] will say: Behold, you were wont to approach us [deceptively] from the right!"

They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"

They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).

Saying: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.

They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."

قَالُوا بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo bal lam takoonoo mu/mineena

Word by Word:

They will say, "Nay, not you were believers,

Translations:

[To which] the others will reply: Nay, you yourselves were bereft of all faith!

They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!

They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.

They will say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers.

The oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,
