37 - The Arrangers (Al-Saffat)

Order of Revelation: 56

بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ

Transliteration:

Bal AAajibta wayaskharoona

Word by Word:

Nay, you wonder, while they mock.

Translations:

Nay, but whereas thou dost marvel, they [only] scoff;

Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,

Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock

Nay, thou wonderest, while they mock,

But you wonder, while they mock,

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا لَا يَذْكُرُونَ

Transliteration:

Wa-itha thukkiroo la yathkuroona

Word by Word:

And when they are reminded, not they receive admonition.

Translations:

and when they are reminded [of the truth], they refuse to take it to heart;

And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-

And heed not when they are reminded,

And when they are reminded, they mind not,

And when they are reminded, they remember not.

وَإِذَا رَأَوْا آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ

Transliteration:

Wa-itha raaw ayatan yastaskhiroona

Word by Word:

And when they see a Sign, they mock,

Translations:

and when they become aware of a [divine] message, they turn it to ridicule

And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,

And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.

And when they see a sign, they seek to scoff,

And when they see a sign, they ridicule

وَقَالُوا إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ

Transliteration:

Waqaloo in hatha illa sihrun mubeenun

And they say, "Not (is) this except a magic clear.

Translations:

and say: This is clearly nothing but [a mortal's] spellbinding eloquence!

And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!

And they say: Lo! this is mere magic;

And say: This is nothing but clear enchantment.

And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

Transliteration:

A-itha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman a-inna lamabAAoothoona

Word by Word:

Is it when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly resurrected,

Translations:

Why - after we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead?

"What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)

When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?

When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be raised,

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ

Transliteration:

Awa abaona al-awwaloona

Word by Word:

Or our fathers former?"

Translations:

and perhaps also our forebears of old?"

"And also our fathers of old?"

And our forefathers?

Or our fathers of yore?

And our forefathers [as well]?"
