54 - The Moon (Al-Qamar)

Order of Revelation: 37

فَقَالُوا أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَاحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُ إِنَّا إِذًا لَّفِي ضَلَالٍ وَسُعُرٍ

Transliteration:

Faqaloo abasharan minna wahidan nattabiAAuhu inna ithan lafee dalalin wasuAAurin

Word by Word:

And said, "Is (it) a human being among us one, (that) we should follow Indeed, we then (will be) surely in error and madness.

Translations:

and they said: Are we to follow one single mortal, one from among ourselves? In that case, behold, we would certainly sink into error and folly!

For they said: "What! a man! a Solitary one from among ourselves! shall we follow such a one? Truly should we then be straying in mind, and mad!

For they said; Is it a mortal man, alone among us, that we are to follow? Then indeed we should fall into error and madness.

Tearing men away as if they were the trunks of palm-trees torn up.

And said, "Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.

أَأُلْقِيَ الذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِن بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ

Transliteration:

Aolqiya alththikru AAalayhi min baynina bal huwa kaththabun ashirun

Word by Word:

Has been sent the Reminder to him from among us? Nay, he (is) a liar insolent."

Translations:

Why - on him alone from among all of us should a [divine] reminder have been bestowed? Nay, but he is a boastful liar!"

"Is it that the Message is sent to him, of all people amongst us? Nay, he is a liar, an insolent one!"

Hath the remembrance been given unto him alone among us? Nay, but he is a rash liar.

How terrible was then My chastisement and My warning!

Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."

سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ الْكَذَّابُ الْأَشِرُ

Transliteration:

SayaAAlamoona ghadan mani alkaththabu al-ashiru

Word by Word:

They will know tomorrow who (is) the liar, the insolent one.

Translations:

[And God said:] On the morrow they will come to know who the boastful liar is!

Ah! they will know on the morrow, which is the liar, the insolent one!

(Unto their warner it was said): To-morrow they will know who is the rash liar.

And certainly We have made the Qur'an easy to remember, but is there any one who will mind?

They will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.

إِنَّا مُرْسِلُو النَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَارْتَقِبْهُمْ وَاصْطَبِرْ

Transliteration:

Inna mursiloo alnnaqati fitnatan lahum fairtaqibhum waistabir

Word by Word:

Indeed, We (are) sending the she-camel (as) a trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

Translations:

Behold, [O Salih] We are letting loose this she-camel as a test for them; and thou but watch them, and contain thyself in patience.

For We will send the she-camel by way of trial for them. So watch them, (O Salih), and possess thyself in patience!

Lo! We are sending the she-camel as a test for them; so watch them and have patience;

Thamud rejected the warning.

Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ الْمَاءَ قِسْمَةٌ بَيْنَهُمْ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ

Transliteration:

Wanabbi/hum anna almaa qismatun baynahum kullu shirbin muhtadarun

Word by Word:

And inform them that the water (is) to be shared between them, each drink attended.

Translations:

And let them know that the water [of their wells] is to be divided between them, with each share of water equitably apportioned."

And tell them that the water is to be divided between them: Each one's right to drink being brought forward (by suitable turns).

And inform them that the water is to be shared between (her and) them. Every drinking will be witnessed.

To-morrow they will know who is the liar, the insolent one.

And inform them that the water is shared between them, each [day of] drink attended [by turn].

فَنَادَوْا صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ

Transliteration:

Fanadaw sahibahum fataAAata faAAaqara

Word by Word:

But they called their companion and he took and hamstrung.

Translations:

But they summoned their [boldest] companion, and he ventured [upon the evil deed], and cruelly slaughtered [the animal]:

But they called to their companion, and he took a sword in hand, and hamstrung (her).

But they call their comrade and he took and hamstrung (her).

Surely We are going to send the she-camel as a trial for them; so watch them and have patience.

But they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung [her].
