15 - Al-Hijr Valley (Al-Hijr)

Order of Revelation: 54

فَسَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ

Transliteration:

Fasajada almala-ikatu kulluhum ajmaAAoona

Word by Word:

So prostrated the Angels all of them together,

Translations:

Thereupon the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together,

So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together:

So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together

So the angels made obeisance, all of them together --

So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ

Transliteration:

Illa ibleesa aba an yakoona maAAa alssajideena

Word by Word:

Except Iblis. He refused to be with those who prostrated.

Translations:

save Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves.

Not so Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves.

Save Iblis. He refused to be among the prostrate.

But Iblis (did it not). He refused to be with those who made obeisance.

Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated.

قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ

Transliteration:

Qala ya ibleesu ma laka alla takoona maAAa alssajideena

Word by Word:

He said, "O Iblis! What (is) for you that not you are with those who prostrated?"

Translations:

Said He: "O Iblis! What is thy reason for not being among those who have prostrated themselves?"

(God) said: "O Iblis! what is your reason for not being among those who prostrated themselves?"

He said: O Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate?

He said: O Iblis, what is the reason that thou art not with those who make obeisance?

[ Allah ] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"

قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُ مِن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ

Transliteration:

Qala lam akun li-asjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min salsalin min hama-in masnoonin

Word by Word:

He said, "I am not (one) to prostrate to a human whom You created, (out) of clay from black mud altered."

Translations:

[Iblis] replied: "It is not for me to prostrate myself before mortal man whom Thou hast created out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted!"

(Iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape."

He said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered!

He said: I am not going to make obeisance to a mortal, whom Thou has created of sounding clay, of black mud fashioned into shape.

He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."

قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ

Transliteration:

Qala faokhruj minha fa-innaka rajeemun

Word by Word:

He said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you (are) expelled.

Translations:

Said He: "Go forth, then, from this [angelic state]: for, behold, thou art [henceforth] accursed,

(God) said: "Then get thee out from here; for thou art rejected, accursed.

He said: Then go thou forth from hence, for lo! thou art outcast.

He said: Then go forth, for surely thou art driven away,

[ Allah ] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled.

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

Transliteration:

Wa-inna AAalayka allaAAnata ila yawmi alddeeni

Word by Word:

And indeed, upon you (will be) the curse till (the) Day (of) [the] Judgment."

Translations:

and [My] rejection shall be thy due until the Day of Judgment!"

"And the curse shall be on thee till the day of Judgment."

And lo! the curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment.

And surely on thee is a curse till the day of Judgment.

And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."
