44 - Smoke (Al-Dukhan)

Order of Revelation: 64

وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ

Transliteration:

Waotruki albahra rahwan innahum jundun mughraqoona

Word by Word:

And leave the sea at rest. Indeed, they (are) an army (to be) drowned."

Translations:

and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!"

"And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned."

And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host.

And leave the sea behind calm. Surely they are a host to be drowned.

And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."

كَمْ تَرَكُوا مِن جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Transliteration:

Kam tarakoo min jannatin waAAuyoonin

Word by Word:

How many (did) they leave of gardens and springs,

Translations:

[And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels,

How many were the gardens and springs they left behind,

How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind,

How many the gardens and springs they left behind!

How much they left behind of gardens and springs

وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ

Transliteration:

WazurooAAin wamaqamin kareemin

And cornfields and places noble,

Translations:

and fields of grain, and noble dwellings,

And corn-fields and noble buildings,

And the cornlands and the goodly sites

And cornfields and noble places!

And crops and noble sites

وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا فِيهَا فَاكِهِينَ

Transliteration:

WanaAAmatin kanoo feeha fakiheena

And pleasant things they used to therein take delight!

Translations:

and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight!

And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight!

And pleasant things wherein they took delight!

And goodly things wherein they rejoiced!

And comfort wherein they were amused.

كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا قَوْمًا آخَرِينَ

Transliteration:

Kathalika waawrathnaha qawman akhareena

Word by Word:

Thus. And We made it (an) inherit(ance) (for) a people another.

Translations:

Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left],

Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)!

Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk;

Thus (it was). And We made other people inherit them.

Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.

فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنظَرِينَ

Transliteration:

Fama bakat AAalayhimu alssamao waal-ardu wama kanoo munthareena

And not wept for them the heaven and the earth and not they were given respite.

Translations:

and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite.

And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again).

And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
