52 - Mount Sinai (Al-Toor)

Order of Revelation: 76

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٌ نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيْبَ الْمَنُونِ

Transliteration:

Am yaqooloona shaAAirun natarabbasu bihi rayba almanooni

Word by Word:

Or (do) they say, "A poet, we wait for him a misfortune of time."

Translations:

Or do they say, [He is but] a poet - let us wait what time will do unto him"?

Or do they say:- "A Poet! we await for him some calamity (hatched) by Time!"

Or say they: (he is) a poet, (one) for whom we may expect the accident of time?

Or they say: A poet -- we wait for him the evil accidents of time.

Or do they say [of you], "A poet for whom we await a misfortune of time?"

قُلْ تَرَبَّصُوا فَإِنِّي مَعَكُم مِّنَ الْمُتَرَبِّصِينَ

Transliteration:

Qul tarabbasoo fa-innee maAAakum mina almutarabbiseena

Word by Word:

Say, "Wait, for indeed I am, with you, among those who wait."

Translations:

Say thou: Wait, [then,] hopefully; behold, I, too, shall hopefully wait with you!"

Say thou: "Await ye!- I too will wait along with you!"

Say (unto them): Except (your fill)! Lo! I am with you among the expectant.

Say: Wait, I too wait along with you.

Say, "Wait, for indeed I am, with you, among the waiters."

أَمْ تَأْمُرُهُمْ أَحْلَامُهُم بِهَٰذَا أَمْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ

Transliteration:

Am ta/muruhum ahlamuhum bihatha am hum qawmun taghoona

Word by Word:

Or command them their minds this, or they (are) a people transgressing?

Translations:

Is it their minds that bid them [to take] this [attitude] - or are they [simply] people filled with overweening arrogance?

Is it that their faculties of understanding urge them to this, or are they but a people transgressing beyond bounds?

Do their minds command them to do this, or are they an outrageous folk?

Or do their understandings bid them this? Or are they an inordinate people?

Or do their minds command them to [say] this, or are they a transgressing people?

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُ بَل لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Transliteration:

Am yaqooloona taqawwalahu bal la yu/minoona

Word by Word:

Or (do) they say, "He has made it up" Nay, not they believe.

Translations:

Or do they say, He himself has composed this [message]"? Nay, but they are not willing to believe!

Or do they say, "He fabricated the (Message)"? Nay, they have no faith!

Or say they: He hath invented it? Nay, but they will not believe!

Or say they: He has forged it. Nay, they have no faith.

Or do they say, "He has made it up"? Rather, they do not believe.

فَلْيَأْتُوا بِحَدِيثٍ مِّثْلِهِ إِن كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ

Transliteration:

Falya/too bihadeethin mithlihi in kanoo sadiqeena

Word by Word:

Then let them bring a statement like it, if they are truthful.

Translations:

But then, [if they deem it the work of a mere mortal,] let them produce another discourse like it - if what they say be true!

Let them then produce a recital like unto it,- If (it be) they speak the truth!

Then let them produce speech the like thereof, if they are truthful.

Then let them bring a saying like it, if they are truthful.

Then let them produce a statement like it, if they should be truthful.

أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَيْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ

Transliteration:

Am khuliqoo min ghayri shay-in am humu alkhaliqoona

Word by Word:

Or they were created of nothing, or (are) they the creators?

Translations:

[Or do they deny the existence of God?] Have they themselves been created without anything [that might have caused their creation]? or were they, perchance, their own creators?

Were they created of nothing, or were they themselves the creators?

Or were they created out of naught? Or are they the creators?

Or were they created without a (creative) agency? Or are they the creators?

Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]?
