52 - Mount Sinai (Al-Toor)

Order of Revelation: 76

وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ غِلْمَانٌ لَّهُمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لُؤْلُؤٌ مَّكْنُونٌ

Transliteration:

Wayatoofu AAalayhim ghilmanun lahum kaannahum lu/luon maknoonun

Word by Word:

And will circulate among them boys for them, as if they (were) pearls well-protected.

Translations:

And they will be waited upon by [immortal] youths, [as if they were children] of their own, [as pure] as if they were pearls hidden in their shells.

Round about them will serve, (devoted) to them. Youths (handsome) as Pearls well-guarded.

And there go round, waiting on them menservants of their own, as they were hidden pearls.

And round them go boys of theirs as if they were hidden pearls.

There will circulate among them [servant] boys [especially] for them, as if they were pearls well-protected.

وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ

Transliteration:

Waaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona

Word by Word:

And will approach some of them to others inquiring.

Translations:

And they [who are thus blest] will turn to one another, asking each other [about their past lives].

They will advance to each other, engaging in mutual enquiry.

And some of them draw near unto others, questioning,

And they will advance to each other, questioning --

And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِي أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo inna kunna qablu fee ahlina mushfiqeena

Word by Word:

They will say, "Indeed, we [we] were before among our families fearful,

Translations:

They will say: Behold, aforetime - when we were [still living] in the midst of our kith and kin - we were full of fear [at the thought of God's displeasure]:

They will say: "Aforetime, we were not without fear for the sake of our people.

Saying: Lo! of old, when we were with our families, we were ever anxious;

Saying: Surely we feared before on account of our families.

They will say, "Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful [of displeasing Allah ].

فَمَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَوَقَانَا عَذَابَ السَّمُومِ

Transliteration:

Famanna Allahu AAalayna wawaqana AAathaba alssamoomi

Word by Word:

But Allah conferred favor upon us, and protected us (from the) punishment (of) the Scorching Fire.

Translations:

and so God has graced us with His favour, and has warded off from us all suffering through the scorching winds [of frustration].

"But God has been good to us, and has delivered us from the Penalty of the Scorching Wind.

But Allah hath been gracious unto us and hath preserved us from the torment of the breath of Fire.

But Allah has been gracious to us and He has saved us from the chastisement of the hot wind.

So Allah conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire.

إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration:

Inna kunna min qablu nadAAoohu innahu huwa albarru alrraheemu

Word by Word:

Indeed, we [we] used to before call Him. Indeed, He [He] (is) the Most Kind, the Most Merciful."

Translations:

Verily, we did invoke Him [alone] ere this: [and now He has shown us] that He alone is truly benign, a true dispenser of grace!"

"Truly, we did call unto Him from of old: truly it is He, the Beneficent, the Merciful!"

Lo! we used to pray unto Him of old. Lo! He is the Benign, the Merciful.

Surely We called upon Him before. Surely, He is the Benign, the Merciful

Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful."

فَذَكِّرْ فَمَا أَنتَ بِنِعْمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٍ وَلَا مَجْنُونٍ

Transliteration:

Fathakkir fama anta biniAAmati rabbika bikahin wala majnoonin

Word by Word:

Therefore remind, for not you (are) by (the) grace (of) your Lord a soothsayer, and not a madman.

Translations:

EXHORT, then, [O Prophet, all men:] for, by thy Sustainer's grace, thou art neither a soothsayer nor a madman.

Therefore proclaim thou the praises (of thy Lord): for by the Grace of thy Lord, thou art no (vulgar) soothsayer, nor art thou one possessed.

Therefor warn (men, O Muhammad). By the grace of Allah thou art neither soothsayer nor madman.

So remind for, by the grace of thy Lord thou art no soothsayer, nor madman.

So remind [O Muhammad], for you are not, by the favor of your Lord, a soothsayer or a madman.
