12 - Joseph (Yousuf)

Order of Revelation: 53

وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَا أَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَابْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ

Transliteration:

Watawalla AAanhum waqala ya asafa AAala yoosufa waibyaddat AAaynahu mina alhuzni fahuwa katheemun

Word by Word:

And he turned away from them and said, "Alas, my grief over Yusuf!" And became white his eyes from the grief, and he (was) a suppressor.

Translations:

But he turned away from them and said: "O woe is me for Joseph!"-and his eyes became dim from the grief with which he was filled.

And he turned away from them, and said: "How great is my grief for Joseph!" And his eyes became white with sorrow, and he fell into silent melancholy.

And he turned away from them and said: Alas, my grief for Joseph! And his eyes were whitened with the sorrow that he was suppressing.

And he turned away from them, and said: O my sorrow for Joseph! And his eyes were filled (with tears) on account of the grief, then he repressed (grief).

And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.

قَالُوا تَاللَّهِ تَفْتَأُ تَذْكُرُ يُوسُفَ حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ حَرَضًا أَوْ تَكُونَ مِنَ الْهَالِكِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo taAllahi taftao tathkuru yoosufa hatta takoona haradan aw takoona mina alhalikeena

Word by Word:

They said, "By Allah, you will not cease remembering Yusuf until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."

Translations:

Said [his sons]: "By God! Thou wilt never cease to remember, Joseph till thou art broken in body and spirit or art dead!"

They said: "By God! (never) wilt thou cease to remember Joseph until thou reach the last extremity of illness, or until thou die!"

They said: By Allah, thou wilt never cease remembering Joseph till thy health is ruined or thou art of those who perish!

They said: By Allah! Thou wilt not cease remembering Joseph till thou art prey to disease or thou art of those who perish.

They said, "By Allah , you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."

قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala innama ashkoo baththee wahuznee ila Allahi waaAAlamu mina Allahi ma la taAAlamoona

Word by Word:

He said, "Only I complain (of) my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah what not you know.

Translations:

He answered: "It is only to God that I complain of my deep grief and my sorrow: for I know, from God, something that you do not know.

He said: "I only complain of my distraction and anguish to God, and I know from God that which ye know not...

He said: I expose my distress and anguish only unto Allah, and I know from Allah that which ye know not.

He said: I complain of my grief and sorrow only to Allah, and I know from Allah what you know not.

He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah , and I know from Allah that which you do not know.

يَا بَنِيَّ اذْهَبُوا فَتَحَسَّسُوا مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَيْأَسُوا مِن رَّوْحِ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لَا يَيْأَسُ مِن رَّوْحِ اللَّهِ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْكَافِرُونَ

Transliteration:

Ya baniyya ithhaboo fatahassasoo min yoosufa waakheehi wala tay-asoo min rawhi Allahi innahu la yay-asu min rawhi Allahi illa alqawmu alkafiroona

Word by Word:

O my sons! Go and inquire about Yusuf and his brother, and not despair of (the) Mercy of Allah. Indeed, none despairs of (the) Mercy of Allah except the people the disbelievers."

Translations:

[Hence,] O my sons, go forth and try to obtain some tidings of Joseph and his brother; and do not lose hope of God's life-giving mercy: verily, none but people who deny the truth can ever lose hope of God's life-giving mercy.

"O my sons! go ye and enquire about Joseph and his brother, and never give up hope of God's Soothing Mercy: truly no one despairs of God's Soothing Mercy, except those who have no faith."

Go, O my sons, and ascertain concerning Joseph and his brother, and despair not of the Spirit of Allah. Lo! none despaireth of the Spirit of Allah save disbelieving folk.

O my sons, go and inquire about Joseph and his brother, and despair not of Allah's mercy. Surely none despairs of Allah's mercy except the disbelieving people.

O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah . Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people."

فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الْعَزِيزُ مَسَّنَا وَأَهْلَنَا الضُّرُّ وَجِئْنَا بِبِضَاعَةٍ مُّزْجَاةٍ فَأَوْفِ لَنَا الْكَيْلَ وَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَيْنَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَجْزِي الْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ

Transliteration:

Falamma dakhaloo AAalayhi qaloo ya ayyuha alAAazeezu massana waahlana alddurru waji/na bibidaAAatin muzjatin faawfi lana alkayla watasaddaq AAalayna inna Allaha yajzee almutasaddiqeena

Word by Word:

So when they entered upon him they said, "O Aziz! Has touched us and our family the adversity, and we have with goods (of) little value, but pay (in) full to us the measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable."

Translations:

[AND THE SONS of Jacob went back to Egypt and to Joseph;] and when they presented themselves before him, they said: "O thou great one! Hardship has visited us and our folk, and so we have brought but scanty merchandise; but give us a full measure [of grain], and be charitable to us: behold, God rewards those who give in charity!"

Then, when they came (back) into (Joseph's) presence they said: "O exalted one! distress has seized us and our family: we have (now) brought but scanty capital: so pay us full measure, (we pray thee), and treat it as charity to us: for God doth reward the charitable."

And when they came (again) before him (Joseph) they said: O ruler! Misfortune hath touched us and our folk, and we bring but poor merchandise, so fill for us the measure and be charitable unto us. Lo! Allah will requite the charitable,

So when they came to him, they said: O chief, distress has afflicted us and our family, and we have brought scanty money, so give us full measure and be charitable to us. Surely Allah rewards the charitable.

So when they entered upon Joseph, they said, "O 'Azeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable."

قَالَ هَلْ عَلِمْتُم مَّا فَعَلْتُم بِيُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ إِذْ أَنتُمْ جَاهِلُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala hal AAalimtum ma faAAaltum biyoosufa waakheehi ith antum jahiloona

Word by Word:

He said, "Do you know what you did with Yusuf and his brother, when you were ignorant?"

Translations:

Replied he: "Do you remember what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were still unaware [of right and wrong]?"

He said: "Know ye how ye dealt with Joseph and his brother, not knowing (what ye were doing)?"

He said: Know ye what ye did unto Joseph and his brother in your ignorance?

He said: Do you know how you treated Joseph and his brother, when you were ignorant?

He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?"
