12 - Joseph (Yousuf)

Order of Revelation: 53

وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ ائْتُونِي بِهِ أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِي فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُ قَالَ إِنَّكَ الْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِينٌ

Transliteration:

Waqala almaliku i/toonee bihi astakhlishu linafsee falamma kallamahu qala innaka alyawma ladayna makeenun ameenun

Word by Word:

And said the king, "Bring him to me; I will select him for myself." Then when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you (are) today with us firmly established (and) trusted."

Translations:

And the King said: "Bring him unto me, so that I may attach him to my own person." And when he had spoken with him, [the King] said: "Behold, [from] this day thou shalt be of high standing with us, invested with all trust!"

So the king said: "Bring him unto me; I will take him specially to serve about my own person." Therefore when he had spoken to him, he said: "Be assured this day, thou art, before our own presence, with rank firmly established, and fidelity fu lly proved!

And the king said: Bring him unto me that I may attach him to my person. And when he had talked with him he said: Lo! thou art to-day in our presence established and trusted.

And the king said: Bring him to me, I will choose him for myself. So when he talked with him, he said: Surely thou art in our presence to-day dignified, trusted.

And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted."

قَالَ اجْعَلْنِي عَلَىٰ خَزَائِنِ الْأَرْضِ إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ

Transliteration:

Qala ijAAalnee AAala khaza-ini al-ardi innee hafeethun AAaleemun

Word by Word:

He said, "Appoint me over (the) treasuries (of) the land. Indeed, I (will be) a guardian knowing."

Translations:

[Joseph] replied: "Place in my charge the store-houses of the land; behold, I shall be a good and knowing keeper.

(Joseph) said: "Set me over the store-houses of the land: I will indeed guard them, as one that knows (their importance)."

He said: Set me over the storehouses of the land. Lo! I am a skilled custodian.

He said: Place me (in authority) over the treasures of the land; surely I am a good keeper, knowing well.

[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian."

وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَاءُ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

Transliteration:

Wakathalika makanna liyoosufa fee al-ardi yatabawwao minha haythu yashao nuseebu birahmatina man nashao wala nudeeAAu ajra almuhsineena

Word by Word:

And thus We established [to] Yusuf in the land to settle therein where ever he willed. We bestow Our Mercy (on) whom We will. And not We let go waste (the) reward (of) the good-doers.

Translations:

And thus We established Joseph securely in the land [of Egypt]: he had full mastery over it, [doing] whatever he willed. [Thus do] We cause Our grace to alight upon whomever We will; and We do not fail to requite the doers of good.

Thus did We give established power to Joseph in the land, to take possession therein as, when, or where he pleased. We bestow of our Mercy on whom We please, and We suffer not, to be lost, the reward of those who do good.

Thus gave We power to Joseph in the land. He was the owner of it where he pleased. We reach with Our mercy whom We will. We lose not the reward of the good.

And thus did We give to Joseph power in the land -- he had mastery in it wherever he liked. We bestow Our mercy on whom We please, and We waste not the reward of the doers of good.

And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.

وَلَأَجْرُ الْآخِرَةِ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ

Transliteration:

Walaajru al-akhirati khayrun lillatheena amanoo wakanoo yattaqoona

Word by Word:

And surely (the) reward (of) the Hereafter (is) better for those who believe and are God conscious.

Translations:

But in the eyes of those who have attained to faith and have always been conscious of Us, a reward in the life to come is a far greater good [than any reward in this world].

But verily the reward of the Hereafter is the best, for those who believe, and are constant in righteousness.

And the reward of the Hereafter is better, for those who believe and ward off (evil).

And certainly the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believe and guard against evil.

And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allah .

وَجَاءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُ مُنكِرُونَ

Transliteration:

Wajaa ikhwatu yoosufa fadakhaloo AAalayhi faAAarafahum wahum lahu munkiroona

Word by Word:

And came (the) brothers (of) Yusuf and they entered upon him; and he recognized but they knew him not.

Translations:

AND [after some years,] Joseph's brothers came [to Egypt] and presented themselves before him: and he knew them [at once], whereas they did not recognize him.

Then came Joseph's brethren: they entered his presence, and he knew them, but they knew him not.

And Joseph's brethren came and presented themselves before him, and he knew them but they knew him not.

And Joseph's brethren came and went in to him, and he knew them, while they recognized him not.

And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown.

وَلَمَّا جَهَّزَهُم بِجَهَازِهِمْ قَالَ ائْتُونِي بِأَخٍ لَّكُم مِّنْ أَبِيكُمْ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنِّي أُوفِي الْكَيْلَ وَأَنَا خَيْرُ الْمُنزِلِينَ

Transliteration:

Walamma jahhazahum bijahazihim qala i/toonee bi-akhin lakum min abeekum ala tarawna annee oofee alkayla waana khayru almunzileena

Word by Word:

And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring to me a brother of yours, from your father. Do not you see that I [I] give full [the] measure, and that I am (the) best (of) the hosts?

Translations:

And when he had provided them with their provisions, he said: "[When you come here next,] bring unto me that brother of yours from your father's side. Do you not see that I have given [you] full measure and have been the best of hosts?

And when he had furnished them forth with provisions (suitable) for them, he said: "Bring unto me a brother ye have, of the same father as yourselves, (but a different mother): see ye not that I pay out full measure, and that I do provide the b est hospitality?

And when he provided them with their provision he said: Bring unto me a brother of yours from your father. See ye not that I fill up the measure and I am the best of hosts?

And when he furnished them with their provision, he said: Bring to me a brother of yours from your father. See you not that I give full measure and that I am the best of hosts?

And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do not you see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?
