68 - The Pen (Al-Qalam)

Order of Revelation: 2

أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ

Transliteration:

An la yadkhulannaha alyawma AAalaykum miskeenun

Word by Word:

That "Not will enter it today upon you any poor person."

Translations:

"Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares],"

"Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day."

No needy man shall enter it to-day against you.

No poor man shall enter it to-day to you --

[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."

وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ

Transliteration:

Waghadaw AAala hardin qadireena

Word by Word:

And they went early with determination able.

Translations:

and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose.

And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve.

They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose.

And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent.

And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ

Transliteration:

Falamma raawha qaloo inna ladalloona

Word by Word:

But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we (are) surely lost.

Translations:

But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!"

But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way:

But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error!

But when they saw it, they said: Surely we are in error;

But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

Transliteration:

Bal nahnu mahroomoona

Word by Word:

Nay! We (are) deprived."

Translations:

- [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!"

"Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!"

Nay, but we are desolate!

Nay, we are made to suffer privation.

Rather, we have been deprived."

قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ

Transliteration:

Qala awsatuhum alam aqul lakum lawla tusabbihoona

Word by Word:

Said (the) most moderate of them, "Did not I tell you, 'Why not you glorify (Allah)?'"

Translations:

Said the most right-minded among them: "Did I not tell you, 'Will you not extol God's limitless glory?'"

Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (God)?'"

The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)?

The best of them said: Said I not to you, Why do you not glorify (Allah)?

The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [ Allah ]?' "

قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ

Transliteration:

Qaloo subhana rabbina inna kunna thalimeena

Word by Word:

They said, "Glory be (to) our Lord! Indeed, we [we] were wrongdoers."

Translations:

They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!"

They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!"

They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers.

They said: Glory be to our Lord! surely we were unjust.

They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
