68 - The Pen (Al-Qalam)
Order of Revelation: 2مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
MannaAAin lilkhayri muAAtadin atheemin
A preventer, of (the) good, transgressor, sinful,
[or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor,
(Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin,
Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor
Hinderer of good, outstepping the limits, sinful,
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ
AAutullin baAAda thalika zaneemin
Cruel, after (all) that utterly useless.
[or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and, in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men].
Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,-
Greedy therewithal, intrusive.
Ignoble, besides all that, notoriously mischievous --
Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.
أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ
An kana tha malin wabaneena
Because (he) is a possessor (of) wealth and children,
Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children
Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons.
It is because he is possessed of wealth and children
Because he possess wealth and sons.
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru al-awwaleena
When are recited to him Our Verses, he says, "Stories (of) the former (people)."
that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"?
When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries!
That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old.
When Our messages are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore!
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ
Sanasimuhu AAala alkhurtoomi
We will brand him on the snout.
[For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace!
Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout!
We shall brand him on the nose.
We shall brand him on the snout.
We will brand him upon the snout.
إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ
Inna balawnahum kama balawna as-haba aljannati ith aqsamoo layasrimunnaha musbiheena
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried (the) companions (of) the garden, when they swore to pluck its (in the) morning,
[As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow,
Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning.
Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning,
We shall try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore to pluck its fruits in the morning,
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
