68 - The Pen (Al-Qalam)

Order of Revelation: 2

وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ

Transliteration:

Wala yastathnoona

Word by Word:

And not making exception.

Translations:

and made no allowance [for the will of God]:

But made no reservation, ("If it be God's Will").

And made no exception (for the Will of Allah);

And would not set aside a portion (for the poor).

Without making exception.

فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ

Transliteration:

Fatafa AAalayha ta-ifun min rabbika wahum na-imoona

Word by Word:

So there came upon it a visitation from your Lord, while they were asleep.

Translations:

whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep,

Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep.

Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept

But a visitation from thy Lord came on it, while they slept.

So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ

Transliteration:

Faasbahat kaalssareemi

Word by Word:

So it became as if reaped.

Translations:

so that by the morrow it became barren and bleak.

So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered).

And in the morning it was as if plucked.

So it became as black, barren land --

And it became as though reaped.

فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ

Transliteration:

Fatanadaw musbiheena

Word by Word:

And they called one another (at) morning,

Translations:

Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another,

As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,-

And they cried out one unto another in the morning,

Then they called out one to another in the morning,

And they called one another at morning,

أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَارِمِينَ

Transliteration:

Ani ighdoo AAala harthikum in kuntum sarimeena

Word by Word:

That "Go early to your crop if you would pluck (the) fruit."

Translations:

"Go early to your tilth if you want to harvest the fruit!"

"Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits."

Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit).

Saying: Go early to your tilth, if you would pluck (the fruit).

[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."

فَانطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ

Transliteration:

Faintalaqoo wahum yatakhafatoona

Word by Word:

So they went, while they lowered (their) voices,

Translations:

Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another,

So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)-

So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones:

So they went, while they said one to another in low tones:

So they set out, while lowering their voices,
