53 - The Stars (Al-Najm)

Order of Revelation: 23

Transliteration:

Thalika mablaghuhum mina alAAilmi inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu biman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bimani ihtada

Word by Word:

That (is) their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord (is) He (Who) knows best (he) who strays from His Path, and He knows best (he) who is guided.

Translations:

which, to them, is the only thing worth knowing. Behold, thy Sustainer is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, and fully aware is He as to who follows His guidance.

That is as far as knowledge will reach them. Verily thy Lord knoweth best those who stray from His Path, and He knoweth best those who receive guidance.

Such is their sum of knowledge. Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth, and He is Best Aware of him whom goeth right.

And they have no knowledge of it. They follow but conjecture, and surely conjecture avails naught against Truth.

That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.

Transliteration:

Walillahi ma fee alssamawati wama fee al-ardi liyajziya allatheena asaoo bima AAamiloo wayajziya allatheena ahsanoo bialhusna

Word by Word:

And for Allah (is) whatever (is) in the heavens and whatever (is) in the earth that He may recompense those who do evil with what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best.

Translations:

Indeed, unto God belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth: and so He will reward those who do evil in accordance with what they did, and will reward those who do good with ultimate good.

Yea, to God belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: so that He rewards those who do evil, according to their deeds, and He rewards those who do good, with what is best.

And unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, that He may reward those who do evil with that which they have done, and reward those who do good with goodness.

So shun him who turns his back upon Our Reminder, and desires nothing but this world's life.

And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -

Transliteration:

Allatheena yajtaniboona kaba-ira al-ithmi waalfawahisha illa allamama inna rabbaka wasiAAu almaghfirati huwa aAAlamu bikum ith anshaakum mina al-ardi wa-ith antum ajinnatun fee butooni ommahatikum fala tuzakkoo anfusakum huwa aAAlamu bimani ittaqa

Word by Word:

Those who avoid great sins and the immoralities except the small faults; indeed, your Lord (is) vast (in) forgiveness. He (is) most knowing about you when He produced you from the earth and when you (were) fetuses in (the) wombs (of) your mothers. So (do) not ascribe purity (to) yourselves. He knows best (he) who fears.

Translations:

As for those who avoid the [truly] grave sins and shameful deeds - even though they may sometimes stumble behold, thy Sustainer is abounding in forgiveness. He is fully aware of you when He brings you into being out of dust, and when you are still hidden in your mothers' wombs: do not, then, consider yourselves pure - [for] He knows best as to who is conscious of Him.

Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, only (falling into) small faults,- verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness. He knows you well when He brings you out of the earth, And when ye are hidden in your mothers' wombs. Therefore justify not yourselves: He knows best who it is that guards against evil.

Those who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences - (for them) lo! thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is Best Aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefor ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is Best Aware of him who wardeth off (evil).

That is their goal of knowledge. Surely thy Lord knows best him who strays from His path and He knows best him who goes aright.

Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.

Transliteration:

Afaraayta allathee tawalla

Word by Word:

Did you see the one who turned away

Translations:

HAST THOU, then, ever considered him who turns away [from remembering Us, and cares for no more than the life of this world],

Seest thou one who turns back,

Didst thou (O Muhammad) observe him who turned away,

And Allah's is whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, that He may reward those who do evil for that which they do, and reward those who do good with goodness.

Have you seen the one who turned away

Transliteration:

WaaAAta qaleelan waakda

Word by Word:

And gave a little, and withheld?

Translations:

and gives so little [of himself for the good of his soul], and so grudgingly?

Gives a little, then hardens (his heart)?

And gave a little, then was grudging?

Those who avoid the great sins and the indecencies, but the passing idea -- surely thy Lord is Liberal in Forgiving. He knows best when He brings you forth from the earth and when you are embryos in the wombs of your mothers; so ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows him best who guards against evil.

And gave a little and [then] refrained?

Transliteration:

aAAindahu AAilmu alghaybi fahuwa yara

Word by Word:

Is with him (the) knowledge (of) the unseen, so he sees?

Translations:

Does he [claim to] have knowledge of something that is beyond the reach of human perception, so that he can see [it clearly]?

What! Has he knowledge of the Unseen so that he can see?

Hath he knowledge of the Unseen so that he seeth?

Seest thou him who turns back,

Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?
