75 - Resurrection (Al-Qeyaamah)

Order of Revelation: 31

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَاسِرَةٌ

Transliteration:

Wawujoohun yawma-ithin basiratun

Word by Word:

And faces that Day (will be) distorted,

Translations:

and some faces will on that Day be overcast with despair,

And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal,

And that day will other faces be despondent,

And (other) faces that day will be gloomy,

And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,

تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ

Transliteration:

Tathunnu an yufAAala biha faqiratun

Word by Word:

Thinking that will be done to them backbreaking.

Translations:

knowing that a crushing calamity is about to befall them.

In the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them;

Thou wilt know that some great disaster is about to fall on them.

Knowing that a great disaster will be made to befall them.

Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.

كَلَّا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِيَ

Transliteration:

Kalla itha balaghati alttaraqiya

Word by Word:

No! When it reaches the collar bones

Translations:

NAY, but when [the last breath] comes up to the throat [of a dying man],

Yea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit),

Nay, but when the life cometh up to the throat

Nay, when it comes up to the throat,

No! When the soul has reached the collar bones

وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ

Transliteration:

Waqeela man raqin

And it is said, "Who (will) cure?"

Translations:

and people ask, "Is there any wizard [that could save him]?"

And there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"

And men say: Where is the wizard (who can save him now)?

And it is said: Who will ascend (with it)?

And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"

وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُ

Transliteration:

Wathanna annahu alfiraqu

And he is certain that it (is) the parting.

Translations:

the while he [himself] knows that this is the parting,

And he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting;

And he knoweth that it is the parting;

And he is sure that it is the parting,

And the dying one is certain that it is the [time of] separation

وَالْتَفَّتِ السَّاقُ بِالسَّاقِ

Transliteration:

Wailtaffati alssaqu bialssaqi

And is wound, the leg about the leg,

Translations:

and is enwrapped in the pangs of death

And one leg will be joined with another:

And agony is heaped on agony;

And affliction is combined with affliction --

And the leg is wound about the leg,
