74 - The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)

Order of Revelation: 4

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ

Transliteration:

Faqala in hatha illa sihrun yu/tharu

Word by Word:

Then he said, "Not (is) this but magic imitated.

Translations:

and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]!

Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old;

And said: This is naught else than magic from of old;

Then said: This is naught but magic from an old!

And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ

Transliteration:

In hatha illa qawlu albashari

Word by Word:

Not (is) this but (the) word (of) a human being."

Translations:

This is nothing but the word of mortal man!"

"This is nothing but the word of a mortal!"

This is naught else than speech of mortal man.

This is naught but the word of a mortal!

This is not but the word of a human being."

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ

Transliteration:

Saosleehi saqara

Word by Word:

Soon I will drive him (into) Hell.

Translations:

[Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]!

Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire!

Him shall I fling unto the burning.

I will cast him into hell.

I will drive him into Saqar.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ

Transliteration:

Wama adraka ma saqaru

And what can make you know what (is) Hell?

Translations:

And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is?

And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is?

- Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! -

And what will make thee realize what hell is?

And what can make you know what is Saqar?

لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ

Transliteration:

La tubqee wala tatharu

Not it lets remain and not it leaves,

Translations:

It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die],

Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!-

It leaveth naught; it spareth naught

It leaves naught, and spares naught.

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ

Transliteration:

Lawwahatun lilbashari

Scorching the human (skin).

Translations:

making [all truth] visible to mortal man.

Darkening and changing the colour of man!

It shrivelleth the man.

It scorches the mortal.

Blackening the skins.
