8 - Spoils of War (Al-Anfal)

Order of Revelation: 88

Transliteration:

Ith yoohee rabbuka ila almala-ikati annee maAAakum fathabbitoo allatheena amanoo saolqee fee quloobi allatheena kafaroo alrruAAba faidriboo fawqa al-aAAnaqi waidriboo minhum kulla bananin

Word by Word:

When inspired your Lord to the Angels, "I with you, so strengthen those who believed. I will cast in (the) hearts (of) those who disbelieved - the terror, so strike above the necks and strike from them every fingertip[s]."

Translations:

Lo! Thy Sustainer inspired the angels [to convey this His message to the believers]: "I am with you !" [And He commanded the angels:] "And, give firmness unto those who have attained to faith [with these words from Me]: `I shall cast terror into the hearts of those who are bent on denying the truth; strike, then, their necks, [O believers,] and strike off every one of their finger-tips!"

Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them."

When thy Lord inspired the angels, (saying): I am with you. So make those who believe stand firm. I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger.

When thy Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, so make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. So smite above the necks and smite every finger-tip of them.

[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip."

Transliteration:

Thalika bi-annahum shaqqoo Allaha warasoolahu waman yushaqiqi Allaha warasoolahu fa-inna Allaha shadeedu alAAiqabi

Word by Word:

That (is) because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger, then indeed, Allah (is) severe in [the] penalty.

Translations:

This, because they have cut themselves off from God and His Apostle: and as for him who cuts himself off from God and His Apostle - verily, God is severe in retribution.

This because they contended against God and His Apostle: If any contend against God and His Apostle, God is strict in punishment.

That is because they opposed Allah and His messenger. Whoso opposeth Allah and His messenger, (for him) lo! Allah is severe in punishment.

This is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger -- then surely Allah is Severe in requiting.

That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger - indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

Transliteration:

Thalikum fathooqoohu waanna lilkafireena AAathaba alnnari

Word by Word:

That - "So taste it." And that, for the disbelievers (is the) punishment (of) the Fire.

Translations:

This [for you, O enemies of God]! Taste it, then, [and know] that suffering through fire awaits those who deny the truth!

Thus (will it be said): "Taste ye then of the (punishment): for those who resist God, is the penalty of the Fire."

That (is the award), so taste it, and (know) that for disbelievers is the torment of the Fire.

This -- taste it, and (know) that for the disbelievers is the chastisement of the Fire.

"That [is yours], so taste it." And indeed for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.

Transliteration:

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo itha laqeetumu allatheena kafaroo zahfan fala tuwalloohumu al-adbara

Word by Word:

O you who believe! When you meet those who disbelieve advancing, then (do) not turn to them the backs.

Translations:

O YOU who have attained to faith! When you meet in battle those who are bent on denying the truth, advancing in great force, do not turn your backs on them:

O ye who believe! when ye meet the Unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them.

O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them.

O you who believe, when you meet those who disbelieve marching for war, turn not your backs to them.

O you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [for battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight].

Transliteration:

Waman yuwallihim yawma-ithin duburahu illa mutaharrifan liqitalin aw mutahayyizan ila fi-atin faqad baa bighadabin mina Allahi wama/wahu jahannamu wabi/sa almaseeru

Word by Word:

And whoever turns to them his back that day except (as) a strategy of war or (to) join to a group, certainly (he has) incurred wrath of Allah and his abode (is) Hell, a wretched destination.

Translations:

for, whoever on that day turns his back on them-unless it be in a battle manoeuvre or in an endeavour to join another troop [of the believers] - shall indeed have earned the burden of God's condemnation, and his goal shall be hell: and how vile a journey's end!

If any do turn his back to them on such a day - unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of God, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)!

Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless manoeuvring for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end.

And whoso turns his back to them on that day -- unless manoeuvring for battle turning to join a company -- he, indeed, incurs Allah's wrath and his refuge is hell. And an evil destination it is.

And whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allah , and his refuge is Hell - and wretched is the destination.

Transliteration:

Falam taqtuloohum walakinna Allaha qatalahum wama ramayta ith ramayta walakinna Allaha rama waliyubliya almu/mineena minhu balaan hasanan inna Allaha sameeAAun AAaleemun

Word by Word:

And not you kill them, but Allah killed them. And not you threw when you threw, but Allah threw and that He may test the believers from Him (with) a trial good. Indeed, Allah (is) All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Translations:

And yet, [O believers,] it was not you who slew the enemy, but it was God who slew them; and it was not thou who cast [terror into them, O Prophet], when thou didst cast it, but it was God who cast it: and [He did all this] in order that He might test the believers by a goodly test of His Own or daining. Verily, God is all-hearing, all-knowing!

It is not ye who slew them; it was God: when thou threwest (a handful of dust), it was not thy act, but God's: in order that He might test the Believers by a gracious trial from Himself: for God is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things).

Ye (Muslims) slew them not, but Allah slew them. And thou (Muhammad) threwest not when thou didst throw, but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair test from Him. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.

So you slew them not but Allah slew them, and thou smotest not when thou didst smite (the enemy), but Allah smote (him), and that He might confer upon the believers a benefit from Himself. Surely Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
