88 - The Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah)

Order of Revelation: 68

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ

Transliteration:

Laysa lahum taAAamun illa min dareeAAin

Word by Word:

Not is for them food except from a bitter thorny plant,

Translations:

No food for them save the bitterness of dry thorns,

No food will there be for them but a bitter Dhari'

No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit

They will have no food but of thorns,

For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِن جُوعٍ

Transliteration:

La yusminu wala yughnee min jooAAin

Word by Word:

Not it nourishes and not it avails from hunger.

Translations:

which gives no strength and neither stills hunger.

Which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.

Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.

Neither nourishing nor satisfying hunger.

Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ

Transliteration:

Wujoohun yawma-ithin naAAimatun

Faces that Day (will be) joyful.

Translations:

[And] some faces will on that Day shine with bliss,

(Other) faces that Day will be joyful,

In that day other faces will be calm,

Faces on that day will be happy,

[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ

Transliteration:

LisaAAyiha radiyatun

With their effort satisfied,

Translations:

well-pleased with [the fruit of] their striving,

Pleased with their striving,-

Glad for their effort past,

Glad for their striving,

With their effort [they are] satisfied

فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ

Transliteration:

Fee jannatin AAaliyatin

In a garden elevated.

Translations:

in a garden sublime,

In a Garden on high,

In a high Garden

In a lofty Garden,

In an elevated garden,

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً

Transliteration:

La tasmaAAu feeha laghiyatan

Word by Word:

Not they will hear therein vain talk.

Translations:

wherein thou wilt hear no empty talk.

Where they shall hear no (word) of vanity:

Where they hear no idle speech,

Wherein thou wilt hear no vain talk.

Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.
