86 - The Bright Star (Al-Taareq)

Order of Revelation: 36

وَالْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ

Transliteration:

Waal-ardi thati alssadAAi

Word by Word:

And the earth which cracks open,

Translations:

and the earth, bursting forth with plants!

And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),-

And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)

And the earth opening (with herbage)!

And [by] the earth which cracks open,

إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌ

Transliteration:

Innahu laqawlun faslun

Word by Word:

Indeed, it (is) surely a Word decisive,

Translations:

BEHOLD, this [divine writ] is indeed a word that between truth and falsehood,

Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):

Lo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word,

Surely it is a decisive word,

Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,

وَمَا هُوَ بِالْهَزْلِ

Transliteration:

Wama huwa bialhazli

And not it (is) for amusement.

Translations:

and is no idle tale.

It is not a thing for amusement.

It is no pleasantry.

And it is not a joke.

And it is not amusement.

إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًا

Transliteration:

Innahum yakeedoona kaydan

Word by Word:

Indeed, they are plotting a plot,

Translations:

Behold, they [who refuse to accept it] devise many a false argument [to disprove its truth];

As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,

Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)

Surely they plan a plan.

Indeed, they are planning a plan,

وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًا

Transliteration:

Waakeedu kaydan

But I am panning a plan.

Translations:

but I shall bring all their scheming to nought.

And I am planning a scheme.

And I plot a plot (against them).

And I plan a plan.

But I am planning a plan.

فَمَهِّلِ الْكَافِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًا

Transliteration:

Famahhili alkafireena amhilhum ruwaydan

Word by Word:

So give respite (to) the disbelievers. Give respite to them - little.

Translations:

Let, then, the deniers of the truth have their will: let them have their will for a little while.

Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).

So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.

So grant the disbelievers a respite -- let them alone for a while.

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.
